CGI environments

Hi i'm pretty much a noob when it comes to editing and what not, I'm trying to find out what programs are typically used for creating CGI environments. Like what would be used to create the sets for the star wars prequels? Is that all photshop? Do they use an architectural design program like Autocad? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

When working from scratch, I use Lightwave from NewTek. I gotta warn you, though....even with places like simplylilghtwave.com, the learning curve can be pretty steep.

Pretty much any high end 3D package can do this kind of work, so Maya, Softimage, Houdini, Lightwave, Cinema4D and others. For large productions it's usually a vast number of tools though, including modelers (like Modo and ZBrush) and sometimes Autocad or other cad packages. And of course paint tools, content management tools, camera match moving tools, etc. Might want to browse http://mattepainting.org to get some ideas. Digital matte painting/set extension is a pretty broad subject.
