Re: CES

The aladdin's bankrupt, but it's been bought by Planet Hollywood so maybe it'll survive somehow.

Try http://www.bookvegas.com -- those people have been able to place rooms when nobody else could. There are bazillions of small hotels here that you can't book through the main sites (like Expedia etc). The question is, are you going to have your own car? Or rely on cabs? Or need to be on the "shuttle bus" route? That can influence where you get your room at.

Re: CES

I usually try to hit CES for a day.

If you're staying within the general realm of the Strip/convention center, cabs are certainly an option and not too very expensive. But the cheapest/most convenient way is to stay at/near one of the hotels that is on the shuttle bus route.
