certain tapes?

I ordered my dvx finally. I was wondering, if there is a certain type of tape that has to be used for it, or tapes that are better and where you buy them.

I'm sure this has been discussed but I wasn't able to think a the proper keyword to do a search.

thanks.

The short answer is Panasonic tapes, and stick with them, is my understanding. Something to do with dry lube vs. wet lube systems. They come in PQ, MQ and AMQ grades, and people on this board have been using all three.

I got 10 free AMQs with my DVX and I think I'll keep using AMQs. Panasonic claims they're gentler on the heads in the long run. They're a little pricey though - 7.49 is the best price I've found so far (taperesource.com), whereas PQs are only 3.99.

All true. MQ's are worth it because they are have much greater density of magnetic particles than PQ. :)

Significantly better?

Reason I ask is I'm going to order about 20 Tapes for the next 2-Months or so and the difference in price from PQ to MQ means I could be spending up to $200 (with AMQ).

Is it a difference of quality, frame dropouts, or just wear & tear on the camera?

- Thanks

Primarily the integrity of the information you record to tape, i/e how well the footage sticks to the tape. Worth the extra money. Just think of how much it would cost you to reenact everything you will shoot to these tapes... :)

Well as far as I know the AMQ replaced the MQ, and it is superior in quality and ease on the heads. The MQ is just cheaper, under $5. But all the manuals now recommend AMQ, as the MQ is discontinued, so any MQ you find is prolly imported or older stock.

I found this on line:

What is the difference between the Panasonic PQ, MQ and AMQ?

The Panasonic(PQ)professional quality product a new evaporation technology named S-AME(Super Advanced Metal Evaporation). With the new process, it is now possible to improve magnetic density over 400% Panasonic PQ mini dv tape is also available in professional master grade (MQ). "MASTER GRADE" DV Tape is +1db C/N and 1db OUTPUT vs. Pro Standard PQ series. The new (AMQ)series has these further advancements: -Enhanced Durability for Still Images -High Output Level -Superb Total Performance -Low Head Wear -High-Precision Cassette Design -2-Way Opening Soft Case
