Century Optics Wide Angle .7x

I bought a Formatt matte box with some 4x4 filters.. I now want to buy a wide angle lens... century optics.. Can I fit the box on the wide angle lens? If not should I have purchased circular filters instead of the 4x4's??

Re: Century Optics Wide Angle .7x

Well, unfortunately the Formatt matte box will not work with either the Century 0.7X or 0.6X lenses. Both lenses bayonet mount to the external bayonet mounting for the lens hood. And the lenses don't have front filter threads, so circular filters can't be used. It's a frustrating design considering how easy it is to catch some flare with wideangle lenses. You can do like me and construct you're own matte box/hood, but that leaves the filter issue unresolved.

Re: Century Optics Wide Angle .7x

So are you saying that filters cannot be used with the wide angle? ???

Re: Century Optics Wide Angle .7x

Well, not easily. You either have to build your own custom matte box *with* a filter holder or rig some sort of filter holder.

Hi Barry,
Just the topic I;m interested in.
I just got the .7x and am wondering how to deal with
the lens hood issue.
I want something that will be compatible for 'run and gun'
work. Is there anything that is compatible with that application? I don't need filters or at least can do withoutl.

Chuck--I'm building a shade out of thin black corrugated plastic board.  They sell sheets of this at art stores and It's pretty durable.  It's called Stratocore or Coroplast.  I'm just going to velcro it to the lens becasue it's pretty light.

I'm also planning to glue in some black velvet for the interior to cut down on any reflections, because the surface is a little bit glossy.

Re: Century Optics Wide Angle .7x

Sure, I'd be glad to post some pics when I get it finished. It's not going to be anything fancy, though. Just something enough to shade the lens and be reasonably durable.
