Century Optics Anamorphic Adapter

I have another question that I'd like to throw out there.

We all know that the Panasonic's Anamorphic adapter has a sqaure front so that no screw in filters can be attached.

My question is whether the Century Optics Adapter will allow screw in circular filters to be attached.

I guess no one can really answer this question unless you are a Century Optics emplyee, *hint* *hint*, but what about the anamorphic adapters that they make for other DV camcroders. Do they allow circular fiilters to be screwed on? If so, what are the sizes. For instance, if the PD150 has 60mm filter screw in, will the Century Optics anamorphic adapter has the same filter size, or somthing bigger?

Thanks

Re: Century Optics Anamorphic Adapter

Last time I spoke with Century Optics about the anamorphic adapter I was told that it would have a very large diameter, something like 115mm, and its own focus ring.

I'm not sure about screw on filters but at that size you would need a professional mattebox and 4x4 or 4x5 type filters thereby increasing the cost substantially.

Hopefully we'll get an update on this though.

It's own focus ring???

That kind of scares me. How would you ever focus properly? You'd need some sort of device that would focus both rings at once? Or do you have to read off the MF # and match it to the focus ring in the adapter?

And 115mm also scares. I don't think they make screw in filters that big :(

I came from a Camera distributor, and they said that Century Optic's Anamorphic adaters for other camcorders do not have screw in filters. Although I saw their wide angle adapters with screwin filters in front.

It'd be great if someone from Century Optics comment on this *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*

Re: Century Optics Anamorphic Adapter

I agree. But more horrifying to you may be the estimated price on the adapter itself: $2000. Throw in a mattebox that can accomodate the large diameter and you're looking at another $2000 and more.

However, at this point the information is subject to change. If you're really anxious, you may want to write them yourself. That's how I got the info (spoke with one of their engineers). He's registered on this forum so maybe he'll speak up soon enough. Despite the price I'm sure it will be very high quality glass and a product that won't disappoint. That's if they haven't given up on it...

Re: Century Optics Anamorphic Adapter

the focus ring on the century adaptor would be to accomodate the misligned focusing ofthe horizontal and vertical planes inherant with anamorphic adaptors. basically with an anamorphic adaptor you are bending the light from the horizontal plane, without bending the vertical. doing this results in the horizontal plane coming into focus at a different distance than the vertical. the focus ring on the adaptor would either focus the vertical or the horizontal,(possibly both with 2 rings) but basically it would allow you to bring them back to being in focus at the same distance. this would allow for much sharper images while using the adaptor.. so you wouldnt see to much softening at all from the lense when zoomed in alot, and you would of course still get your 16:9 image. really you should only have to set the focus once on a full zoom in, and then just leave it set there, and use the focus on the dvx from then on like normal.. why it wouldnt be done in the factory like that..i dont know. (perhaps so it can work with different cameras?) but at least you can make corrections if you ever need to then with the ring.
