Centre crop. / windowed mode vs zooming in post

I did a locked off test shot (Ursa) with 1 version in HD windowed mode and the other in 4k full frame, then zoomed the 4k shot in 2x so that the shot size matched and the 4k zoomed shot looked much sharper and more detailed. I wasn't especially surprised but I must confess I'm not sure of the technical reasons why this should be the case. Anyone?
Thanks,
Steve

Let me start by saying "I don't know the answer". But we can narrow it down.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, at least not entirely.

Over the past 2 years there have been a number of 4k cameras that have a window or crop mode and their performance has been all over the board.
Some of the 4k camera's window/crop modes are producing some manner of better image while on others it's worse. So...

With the general design of sensors being relatively similar in basic function, I suspect it's all about how the maker has handles the software. This is GOOD news if your camera's maker is one of the ones that updates their firmware with some regularity - like Blackmagic Design and Samsung because that means they might stand a chance at improving that function.

Can anyone else add more info?

Obviously an unexplainable phenomenon! Thanks Stewart anyway :)I thought it may be to do with the debayer and the fact that the 4k image containing more pixels would be left more intact after the process than the windowed one, allowing the crop to be more detailed. I assume the result would be the same on the likes of the F55 and other crop cameras too?Steve
