Cedar Rapids

I didn't see a thread devoted to this film. Just saw it at the second-run theater in Sherman Oaks; surprised it passed through so fast.

They definitely pulled some tricky marketing on this to pass it off as a goofy comedy, which it's not. It's very much a dramedy along the lines of Little Miss Sunshine. Felt lost with it for the first two-thirds of the film because it wasn't what I was expecting and I was waiting for the funny to start. This film is very naturalistic and a lot of set-up time is given to let the characters breathe and convey what they're about--which is mostly complex and three dimensional. The cinematography lends to this with some great motivated lighting and colors through curtains and the like. John C. Reilly is amazingly funny as always and really seems to have a good time in his role. I'm glad we're living in times when so many films are embracing older actors who don't have the chiseled good looks of Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.

At the end, this film really won me over and I'm glad I took a chance on it. 3 and a quarter stars on a 4 star scale.

I'm boycotting this film because I live in Cedar Rapids and they didn't shoot it here. :D

Actually I'm not sure it even played here, ironically...

I think they got a much more substantial tax rebate elsewhere. With an $8 million budget you gotta go where it's cheap!

Really enjoyed this movie, and John C. Reilly has one of the funniest lines I have ever heard, but repeating it out of context just wouldn't work on here.
