cc question, how to achieve this?

I pm'ed monte, the guy who did this but wanted to ask this overall. how do you think i can get the look in this image. more specifically i need to know how to darken out the corners of a frame like he did:

with a matte i guess

yeah, matte it out, feather the edges, copy the clip and place under the matted clip(remove the matte effect obviously) then CC that second clip and darken it up.
