CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

I am sure a lot of you hate reality tv shows but I am a Survivor fan even though I do work for the competition! LOL! Anyway, I was wondering how they go about shooting a show like that. You never ever see the crew, or reflection of the camera or boom mic or nothing in none of the shots. When they do the challenges, they have wide shots and close ups, and again you never see another crew person in a shot. On the flipside reality shows on Mtv you will always catch a glimpse of a second camera or see the microphone in the shot etc. I guess CBS does a good job editing all that stuff out. I just wonder how they pull off some of those shots. Like for challenges that require them to swim under water...they are crew down there filming and you never see them either! LOL!

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

in the challenges probably they use teles for sure and i saw in our one their disposition is set to never be able to catch another camera. And for the sound, well, they are like animals, why don´t use the same technics; i mean, those parabolic mics, maybe some hidden one in a stone... And for the followings, they just put one camera, and sometimes maybe a minidv running around, anyway, lot of recorded time to make a good editing session.

For me, lot of times looks just scripted... But i love our host...

P.D. What means LOL? hell i don´t get it, and i tried all the combinations!!!

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

I wanna be on Survivor.

I even have my audition tape shot and edited in my head. Hell, maybe I'll even do it.

But I would beg and plead not to be voted off until I lost the 20 pounds I want to lose. Screw the million bucks...I'm sick of having to buy new pants in ever-increasing sizes.

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

they do it over and over. Alot more of Survivor is scripted than you think.
I have spoken to several cameramen that work that show.

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

I love SURVIVOR; still watch it and this season looks to be a good one. Other than that I do not watch any other 'reality' shows.

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

Remember the controversy from season two? They staged "extras" in matching clothing to recreate the challenge... this way they could get some nice helicopter wides.

And don't their cameramen wear guile suits and hide in the bush? ???

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

I've watched every season of this show, and the production values are the benchmark for every show that has come since. Whatever you think of reality television, you can't argue with the Survivor look.

Think of reality TV before Survivor as a boardwalk full of ramshackle rides operated by zit-faced teenage boys in ill-fitting shirts, and post-Survivor as a Disneyland caliber experience, with almost all the gritty details secreted from the public eye.

Mark Burnett perfected this style doing his Eco-Challenge events in the '90s. A major departure from the Camel Trophy events staged before, Eco-Challenge worked harder to have a tranparent crew.

I for one would love to watch their production process firsthand. Their distant location crews consistently number upward of 250 people - hiding that is a major undertaking!

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

There was a special a few months back on the filming of Survivor. Last season, they had a crew of 450, including their own power, water, and sewer plants back at production camp. Also a cafeteria and hospital. So much for a supposedly deserted island. Tribal counsel has 15 camera coverage on average, so next time you see that little group of contestants in front of the tribal counsel fire, imagine all the people on the off-camera side of Jeff (cameramen, sound people, producers, etc). They must be stacked on risers or scaffolds. They have lighting poles set up at the camp (for nice clear pictures on a cloudy day, or for shadow fill), hanging microphones all over the place (like above the campfire, hidden in trees), generators, etc. Crew is not supposed to eat in front of contestants, but sometimes that rule is waived, like for a pregnant producer. When that guy fell in the fire a few years back, several camera crews stood and taped it instead of actually rendering first aid. Producer was quoted as saying he would fire AND SUE anyone who helped the guy before the medical team got there.

Re: CBS SHOW "SURVIVOR"

Haha, the best bit was how he said "my grandma's at home watching Jerry Springer right now."
