Cavision mattebox vignetting

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Yeah the flag is pretty big, so you should only use it when you have to control flairs.. I know it looks cool, but if it ruins the shot then kill it.

If you shoot 16x9 however, then it gives you alot more room.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Sweet! Ok If Jared says no vignetting, I'm going with it. I'm ordering one tomorrow. ;D Thanks J dogg.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Cool! I'll have mine on Thursday and you'll get yours Friday.

As I said in an earlier post...
The mattebox, top french flag, two side french flags, conical step-up ring and 2-day Fed Ex shipping for a grand total of $545.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

yes.. I just double checked.. the 4x4 with the CV adapter ring doesnt vig. at all, even with a partial filter roatation. The only way I could get it to start vignetting is if I put an old fat Tiffen UV filter on between the adapter ring and the camera. Well, at least it doesnt on my camera.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

the B+W is a great fitler, because it is multicoated unlike the one you have now. using a multicoated filter in a big mattebox isnt as much of a good idea as it is when you dont, because you are dealing with less light reflections, but it still is important.

It would probally be a better idea to get a slim type 85mm filter and put it on in front of the adapter ring, as it will avoid vignetting much more than if you put a 72mm uv behind the adapter ring. Or of course, you can buy a 4x4 UV filter and put it in one of the trays.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I paid $480 last summer for my Cavision matte box with adapter ring, and french flag, and 2 4x4 filter holders. I didn't get the bellows or hand grips. That price included duties to shipping it to the USA. I can't remember if I had it shipped Fed Ex or not.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I made my order this Monday and the 4x4 with top french flag *and* side french flags, conical step up ring, shipping for $545.

I didn't request Fed Ex. Rather, I was told this is the method of shipping they use for US orders.

I still think it's a good deal compared to other systems.

JARED! I started thinking (dangerous I know) You said your's has no vignetting. Did you test with or without the rods in this picture? That would make a difference right? :) Just wonderin'...

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Ok, so I want to but the same mattebox that is connected to Jarred's Cam in the picture..The Cavision 4x4. What are all the pieces I need to buy to connect it to my camera. Adapters..rods..etc..? Thanks

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Hey Jarred, you have a wide-angle lens, don't you? How does this Cavision 4x4 hold up with a .6 wide-angle on it?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

K.. first of all those rods and that truck riser Is my own invention, meaning I machined it myself, so cost on that would be about $7 in aluminum. It has no effect on vignetting, as the lens is the same distance if you use rods or not, in my setup there, because I have it mounted with the adapter ring and rods.

If you did use just rods you could get away with not needing the adapter ring, which would put the mattebox closer to the camera. This would kill out vignetting for sure, you could even use a 72mm uv. You just gotta make sure you dont put it so close to the camera that the trays hit the mic.

the .6 wont work, it vignettes the corners of the hood :( a .7 may work, but I dont have one so I couldnt tell ya.

The parts in that poc are the $349 mattebox and adapter ring, and the $35 french flag. The bottom french flag is actually for the 3x3, but I made it work on the 4x4, as it is the perfect size to put on for side flags.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

ok, i thought the 4x4 had a different type of mattebox(the expanding looking one).

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Cavision sells rods specifically for the 4x4 mattebox (not the expanding one) right? Correct me if I am wrong but they have one specifically for the DVX too or miniDV cams in general?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

any updates on the 3x3 mattebox? father's day is coming up so i'd like to ask the mrs. for one... :D

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

The only way for the 3 X 3 to NOT vignette upon Filter Rotation is:

To remove the U.V. Filter and use the standard threaded adapter and then; get this -

Insert the filter from the bottom. I havent tried it this way but have been told by Jason at Cavsion that this is the only way to do it. Keep in mind; it only vignettes when ROTATING.

I currently have the 3 X 3 (WHICH I STILL THINK IS A GREAT PRODUCT) and am currently deciding how much of a big deal it is for me with the ROTATING issue.

If I must ROTATE and Jasons claims are true, then when I run into the situation I would have to remove my UV and reattach the Mattebox and slide the filter in from BENEATH the MB.

Sigh......

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

yes.. a little monkey business putting it upside down, and if you have rods it wont really work, but it is a solution. also, keep in mind, if you always shoot in 16x9 or shoot 4:3 for TV (dont care about underscan) then the vignetting wont appear in the safe zones.
