Cavision mattebox vignetting

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

My take (perhaps others have a better solution) - first off get the xl1 adapter (brings the matte box closer to the lens and it's cheaper). If you want (and use) a UV filter, it will bring the matte box filter trays just beyond the on board mic (a good thing). Problem is, by doing this you will also encounter vignetting when rotating the filter (ie polarizer). Solution, take off the UV (when using a pola) so the matte box is closer to the lens (no vignetting this way). Problem - you can't keep the rear filter upright when doing this, for the on board mic gets in the way). You may consider a 4x4 matte box as some have suggested. Obviously these filters are wide enough to cover the full frame when the DVX100 is zoomed out to its fullest. My concern with this is still that the filters are too far from the lens. Not that you will experience vignetting, but I was able to read the writing on the filter when viewing through the viewfinder. If this is the case, it will also be susceptible to picking up any abrasions, fingerprints, dust, patterns on softnets, live chickens, etc. Also, if you use grads and they're too far from the lens, well they may not be "grads" any more. Something I'm thinking of doing is machining down the "pull out handle" on the rear filter tray so it sits with a lower profile. This way it can clear below the on board mic and still sit upright. Problem with this - you can't use the UV filter. Though I'm not really a UV filter fan (mind you this lens is difficult to clean without it), some might really have a problem with this. So, a second potential solution - Machine down the depth of the XL1 adapter as well. I know, this is a lot of work and it would be good if Cavision would do this for us in the first place, but these are potential solutions for what is in the end a nice little matte box.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Jason is working to resolve this problem and will be getting back to me ASAP. Initially, I was thinking taking off the UV Filter but then realized you need that extension to clear Mic... :P

Im not stressing to hard (although I will when the time comes for rotation!). As soon as I know Ill post!

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I dont recommend getting the 3x3 until they figure out a solution, which I think they will. I took my 3x3 back, and bought the same model (non belows) but the 4x4 version and it kicks ass, the hood is solid instead of flexible, and there are no issues. Granted, its $350 vs $199, but im happy with the 4x4. Plus, the 4x4 can accept 4x5.6 filters as well.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

nope, no rods, just like the $199 little brother.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Jarred, your setup is killer! 8)

Now, just to clarify. If I buy the whole thing from cavision, I'll have this mattebox (or the adjustable one), the rods that are essential for the follow-focus, and two grips so it looks like a digital cinema camera. It all looks very nice, but why would I need the handles if I can't get this baby on my shoulders? Is there a shoulder support to go with all this acessories?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Jared...your final verdict?

I want to get a Cavision. Right now, the one to get is the 4X4 without rods and bellows.

To my understanding, the bellows and the wideangle dvx lens aren't too good together. AND without the bellows there's no need for the rods?

Cavision 4X4, one fixed, one rotating and No vignetting??
$350?

If you answer yes to all of these, I'll be placing my order tomorrow! ;D Thanks

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

And, while you're at it... would that 4x4 accomodate the Century .6 without vignetting?

And the bazillion-dollar-question... how about the anamorphic adapter?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I'm thinking of buying the Cavision clamp-on 4x4 mattebox, too. I'm considering their FF as well which means I need the rods.

What else will I need for this system to work? Will I need the Century focus ring?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Post from Jarred--
How long ago did you buy it? Cavision has a new adapter ring that is supposed to solve that problem. Now, the new adapter ring was to make it so that the trays would come out past the mic, maybe that made the vignetting worse? let me know.

Now, I have the Cavision 4X4 Matte box. I bought it July of 2003 and I am noticing vignetting at the top left corner of the screen if I am at my widest point. My filter holders sit out in front of the mic with the included adapter ring.

Also I constantly get the French Flag in my shots when I use it! I know what it is used for but no matter how much I adjust it to block light coming into the camera I still end up getting it in the shot. Are there any remedies for this? I have also tried to zoom in and set my shot from that point but that usually means that I will have to compress my shots.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Is that a post FROM jared or a post TO jared?

Did he say this? or are you saying there is vignetting?

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

OK, I just ordered my 4x4 clamp-on mattebox from Cavision.

The mattebox, top french flag, two side french flags, conical step-up ring and 2-day Fed Ex shipping for a grand total of $545.

Due to the fact that I also ordered $600 from EVS this morning (+3.5 Century diopter, ME-64 mic capsule, windscreen), I've decided to hold off on the follow focus for the time being.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

To terry, If you buy the cavision FF, DON'T buy the century optics ring, they are not compatible. I found out the hard way. You could of course buy the ring and then find the proper gear to go on the FF, which is what I am doing now. I hate not using the ring. A standard film gear is what you need, now what is standard, I don't know. I was using a chrosziel FF for awhile and that gear worked. BUT the FF is nice.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I started my post with a post that Jared stated on I think the 1st page...I have the 4x4 Cavision Matte box and I have vignetting when I am all the way wide.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I was assured by Jason at Cavision that there was absolutely no vignetting problem with the 4x4 clamp-on mattebox on the DVX.

The line that stands out to me is "... and there are no issues".

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Now I don't know what to do, I'll probably go with the 4X4 and just hold 2 filters non rotating. Just in case.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

I have zero vignetting with the 4x4.. what is your setup?

To have vignetting with a 4x4 mattebox you gotta be doing something strange, unless you are using the bellows version with it completely extended.

As for the flag getting in the shot, its adjustable as you know, so you just gotta make sure its out of the shot... take it off if you want I guess, but I never have problems with it.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

as for the 3x3, Jason from Cavision told me today he is going to test out some solutions today.

Re: Cavision mattebox vignetting

Ok I just did a test and I did not notice vignetting. So I may not have had the mattebox clamped down good enough. As for the flag, I have been shooting without it lately. It seems to get in the shot when I adjust it. Maybe I am using the flag for the wrong reason now that I think about it. I should be using it to block out light that would normally cause lens flare. I guess I need to experiment some more with it.
