Cavision Matte Box

Re: Cavision Matte Box

and make sure you get the 4x4 not the 3x3. They have a special DVXuser member discount if you ask for it.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

If you get their 4x4 mattebox, you'll see it's not very quality. It sags at the top under it's own weight and if you put that big french flag on it (which doesn't stay secured) you'll definitely notice it sagging.

When you return it due to its lack of quality there will be a 15% restocking fee on it.

Sorry, Cavision lovers...

Re: Cavision Matte Box

g-D D@*(& it!! Why does everything decent for the dvx have some serious faults or cost a freakin fortune  >:(

Re: Cavision Matte Box

lol.. Are you talking about the old 4x4 or the new 4x4? the new one isnt bad, And i use it without any "sagging". The 3x3 and the old 4x4 where made out of rubber like crap.

And as for the 3x3.. its not a filter problem, the thing vignettes and they have not found a solution to it except for mounting it upside down, which is a little silly in my honest opinion, and I wouldnt ever think about mounting a mattebox upside down.

So far the only mattebox that is completely fault free is the MAtteblox, even though the velcro filter is an interesting experiment in design. The Vocas/Century isnt bad but the build is bad. The Bogen mattebox is very good, but doesnt work with the DVX properly, but they are working on a fix.

I think that this year was the first round for matteboxes, new territory that is the DVX, so hopefully next year they all will come out with a better design.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

seems like the Chrosziel is about the only one you havent talked about. Omission due to obvious quality? Looks like a brilliant design, aside from the price.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

Said this a dozen times:

I have the 3 by 3 and have no PRODUCTION issues in terms of quality or build. Vignetting occurs on rotation of filter at about 90 degrees. Other than that a solid design and Im happy.

As Jarred mentioned, get the 4 X 4.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

Hey everyone i think John Hudson has the 3X3...we'll have to ask him about it. ;D

you are correct.. The chrosziel is in a different class of all these matteboxes, and obviously so considering its 3x the price... they have also been around for many many years so they have pretty much perfected the design.

The arri 6x6 to me however, is at the top of the food chain. I just rent it when I can, because Its hard for me to pay more for a mattebox than the camera.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

I just used the CAVision 4x4 on location for 2 weeks of shooting.

I would shoot some test footage with the camera to make sure that you have the "dreaded vignette" issue worked out. Since I the mattebox didn't arrive until the day before I left, I didn't get a chance to test everything. So when I started reviewing footage, I discovered how wide the DV-100 lens shoots. I didn't have a field monitor and I was so focused while shooting documentary footage, I didn't notice. :(

Another quick plus for the CAVision:
-My camera got knocked over by an onlooker-lens first into the ground. My 4x4 glass polarizer and ND Grad filters pretty much exploded*, but the mattebox, french flag, supports, etc., held up and my screw-on UV filter** protected the lens.

Disclaimers:
* The UV filter protected the lens from flying glass. The mattebox took the brunt of the impact.
** I know you aren't supposed to use the UV filter with the polarizer and ND grad, but it saved the surface of my lens. One mistake I'm glad I made. :)

Re: Cavision Matte Box

I love horrible stories like that that turn out good :)

Re: Cavision Matte Box

Hey guys, I purchased the 4x4 hard box a week ago. I've seen no vignetting, and yes there was an old version that was made out of a softer material. I would have to give the newer cavision 2 thumbs up. The proper setup should be with the XL1 adapter ring which brings the box closer but still clears the onboard mic, also rails are nice but not nessecary, I have both the setups and both are secure. Now about the chrosziel, before I got my cavision I would have said buy the chrosziel 4x4, having worked with their 4x4 and their 6x6 I know how beautifully machined they are. BUT, since purchasing and using the new cavision 4x4 I would not so readily advise the chrosziel, unless of course you had the money for the 6x6. I may have given an earlier opinion on the cavision but I did not know they had changed the material, I was going on my experience with the 3x3 that I bought a couple of years ago.

So to sum up, in its price range I would say the Cavision 4x4 hardshade mattebox is hard to beat. IMO.

Re: Cavision Matte Box

not the bellows version.. you dont want the bellows version you want the hard one.
