i am not happy with how poorly the rotating filter tray sits in this unit... the whole circular rotating part seems to want to come out of alignment when I try to adjust it... do i have a faulty unit or is this something you guys live with? :-/
I know that Cavision lovers abound on this site, but I sent my 4x4 back as I didn't like it or trust it.
I thought the entire mattebox was not rigid enough and the clips holding the french flag to the mattebox were weak and one simply would not grab hold securely.
Sometimes, I had to almost fight the rotating filter stage to get it to turn.
Even though I explained these issues to Jason at Cavision, they still charged a 15% re-stocking fee once they had it back in their hands.

this more a less exactly sums up my feelings about the cavision mattebox...
damn... I was hoping mine was just defective...
what alternative did you go with? I need a mattebox of these specs (but with better hardware.)
i use the chrosziel mattbox with cavisin plate and roads since the german one is kind of ripp-off, its interesting if the format can be hooked or been supported by the cavision , maybe jarred can check it too.
the cavision has 2 little screws that are kinda hidden that are shipped a little loose. these screws hold the entire assembly together, and if you tighten them everything gets alot more rigid. Dont worry, when they where loose I wanted to throw the thing out the window.

yeah - I found them earlier today actually (I think you mean the screws on the lower side brackets that hold the front and back of the unit together)
anyway - yeah it is a lot better after cranking them down, but this unit is still no where near what I am use to with motion picture gear (but I guess at 1/100the price it's not soooo bad.)
funny you mentioned throwing it out the window - I actually had the rotating filter tray in my hand and wound up to throw it after the 20th time it fell out while I was testing the rotation on the first day (I didn't actually throw it thank god )
yeah.. no question it doesnt match a cinema gear. Before My introduction to "video" matteboxes I always used a Arri 6x6 with 6 stage tray on the DVX.. nothing, not even a Chroz, will ever match that. But for 300 bucks, I didn't really expect it to.
Are you guys talking about the regular 4x4 or the bellowes? I have the bellowes(sp?) and haven't had a problem yet. In regards to the filter trays and assembly, does anyone know if they are built the same?
