The price of the Matteblox, with the 72mm adapter and oversized french flag is $204.50. The Cavision 3x3 with the rods is $299. Which one would be the way to go? Is the Cavision worth the extra $95?

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

I went the 3 x 3 CAVISION route strictly for the quality of construction and the rotating stage options.

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

i went the matteblox way (new cool black one.. i think it was 1st one :) ) its folds down nice to fit in small bag, and can be popped out, and used when needed. i rotate the whole setup on the mopunt ring to get polarized dialing if needed, but t not really the best way to do it for that, so i also pimp on the hard boxes. they are both very nice imho. i would jst get one of each :)

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

one of each is the way I went too.. The matteblox is genious because you can run and gun and put it away very easy, and you dont need a new bag or box for it, even the 3x3 Cavision wont fit assembled in most bags. However, if you use filters alot, the Cavision is the only way to go, you just cant rotate the matteblox as well as you can the Cavision.

I love the large flag the matteblox comes with, and have used it as a flag via velcro a number of times when I will dealing with some huge hits. It also fits the anamorphic adapter (just the flag) perfectly.

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

Okay, so I've got one person who says the Matteblox, one who says the Cavision 3x3. And one who says Get both. ITS A DEAD HEAT!

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

OK... I don't have either... yet.

But I am in the market, as well. I'm looking to get (at the least) a Cavision 3x3 mattebox.

Is it worth the extra $95 (over the Matteblox)? In my opinion, yes.

I realize the Matteblox is designed to be an economical alternative but I can't get over the fact that it looks like a couple of padded camerabag dividers stitched together and held in place with velcro.

In my mind "Run and Gun" and "High Production Value" are two different approaches.

If your shot is worth achieving high production value then use a mattebox with real rotating slots for filters.

I think its important to have a system that can actually retain its shape. Those Matteblox systems look like they could bend and become mis-shaped over time... possibly poking into your shot.

So, my question is one of 3 C's. The 3 C's of mattebox systems... Century, Chrosziel or Cavision?

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

The matteblox hasnt lost shape for me yet.. and its been kicked around quite a bit. Its really made well.

Now for the 3 C's... The Chrosziel is gonna be the best quality box in the list, and the most expensive. The Century looks kinda cool, but build is kinda cheap, lots of plastic and your paying around $500. the Cavision is priced right, but has alot of plastic as well. So I would put Chroz #1, Cavision #2, and Century #3... but honestly I dont think that the Chroz is $500 more better than the Cavision.

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

People complain that the DVX with the Cavision on it won't fit in their camera bag. Is that really a big deal? Is it really time consuming to take on and off? If I were to get the Cavision, what case should I get to fit the whole unit.

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

All matteboxes are like this.. a mattebox makes your camera alot wider and alot longer than most bags where made for, so you need to either take it off each time or get a new bag. ITs easy though to take off, its just a clampscrew you unscrew and remove.. less than 3 seconds.

Re: Cavision 3x3 Vs. Matteblox

I ended up getting the matteblox and the Chrosziel 4x4. The matteblox is really good for lightweight "run and gun" shooting and will get the job done. On a tripod though I would opt for a more solid mattebox such as the cavision or chrosziel.
