Looking at going with a cavision 3x3 mattebox and the 15mm carbon rods setup. I've heard that some people were getting vignetting with the cavision matteboxes. I read something about that being an old adapter, has this problem been fixed? Also i don't want it to mount stricktly onto my lense i want it to be rod supported also. Do i need anything else to attach the box to the rods or is everything i need included in these two items? Finally i've got a davis and sanford provista 75 tripod. Will a base fit onto these rods ok and allow them easy use with my tripod?

This is the box i'm looking at.

and here are the rods

Sorry if any of these questions have been answered else where, I went through a number of pages under search and found no solid answers.

Thanks, Jon

I would call CAVision (604-298-9053) and double check that's all you need. I'm pretty sure you might need some sort of adapter ring to go between your specific cam and the box, which, depending on the piece, ranges from $5-30 if im not mistaken. I could, however, be wrong and that would be all you need. I would just call them to verify before you order. Enjoy!

Just my two cents, but for future compatibility and to allow the use of wide angle lenses, seriously consider a 4x4 box. Grad filters are not normally made in 3x3 and you can rent 4x4 filters if you need a specialty filter for a shoot that you dont want to buy.

The filters will be useable on most cameras and lenses, even some of the broadcast cameras, as long as it is not a wide angle lens.

I know the filters are more expensive but these are things to think about.

Can you recommend a place to look at prices for a cavision 4x4 hard matte box? BHphoto has the 3x3's but the only 4x4s they have from cavision are the bellows type which are much more epensive and i'm told useless on dvx's due to vignetting when pulled out to anything but fully closed. I did a little search on evs and yahoo but didn't find any dealers.

J5_squared,

We stock the Cavision mattebox systems. I'd definitely use the 4x4 or 4x5.65 system. I believe that John Hudson might have the 3x3 system - you might PM him to find out about whether he's experienced vignetting.

Overland-If you could pm me a price for the 4x4 mattebox with out any flags and the basic carbon cavision support system that would be great. BH had the rod setup for $159, the mattebox was $209 (but that was the 3x3) think you could get a quote close to that? I'm a poor film student so my budget is limited.

Thanks, Jon

here's a quote i got from cavision today. these are list prices so it may be a little cheaper from b&h or somewhere...

i think the 4x4 bellows box is a cooler deal than the hard one. looks cooler anyway.

Since i can't find a 4x4 box that isn't atleast twice the price of a 3x3 i'm still considering a 3x3 for now. Even if i have to possibly sell it down the road for a 4x4 (i bought my dvx knowing i'll probably sell it down the road for an hvx so oh well). A question i have is in regards to a wide angle lense though. Can a wide angle not be used with the 3x3 box? Why not does it hit the sides? I would assume a wide angle would be more prone to vignetting and in most cases the the box would have to be removed anyways? Is this a correct assumption?
