Can Premiere Pro CS4 capture video from a DVD-R?

Or would it just be simpler to attach a standalone DVD player to my computer via firewire?

Premiere cant "capture", nor can anything else from a DVD. its like saying can i watch a audio cassette on my tv.

DVD is a delivery format.

You can "rip" the content of the disk or you can attach a dvd player via firewire, the later option is much better IMO.

Sounds good. Thanks.

I know DVD is not the meant to be an archiving medium, but it's better than not getting the footage at all!

In CS4 media browser naviagte to the DVD drive... open the VIDEO_TS folder... double click on any .VOB file.

Yes. CS4 can edit the DVDs directly.

Well enough to "get it done"... It's a bit slow searching the clips and scrubbing (probably because DVD drives read speed ain't great compared to HDD) but it does indeed work.

This is the route I went and it was fine. I copied the VOB files to my HDD and just imported them to Premiere from there.
Everything went well. Thanks!

This is good to know. I have not had to edit a DVD yet but who knows what work I will be doing in future.
