Catfish

In the trailier it mentions, "the final 40 min will [keep you in suspense or something]..." I wonder if the first hour has some substance to hold interest.

The premise is very good, unique and logical. I'm guessing it's a crime drama/psycho-thriller? Perhaps someone phishing on Facebook to attract people to that farmhouse and murder/torture them?

It was here for a sneak peak in September in Toronto... I had tickets to it but couldn't make it but I wish I could've. The directors were there for a Q&A.

No, the movie isn't real, it's the new genre of "documentaries" that are supposed to look real.

From what I read, it got pretty good reviews.

Updates about these guys: Their quirky little movie gets them a deal in a very big franchise...

I saw this and it was not what I expected. But it was largely dull for about the first 3/4ths. Unfortunately, the main subject is a pretty bland character and we spend most of the movie with him. But once they introduce the other character...don't want to spoil...the movie really settles into a genuine and rather moving emotional tone. I really wish there was a lot more about that...other character.

I haven't seen this, but I understand that though most people doubt its authenticity, the filmmakers stand behind it as being "100% true."

"It felt [too perfect] to us also, as we were making it. We're very lucky. We look back at our experience and everything leads to [the moment we discovered things were not what they seemed]. As filmmakers we were ready; we felt like we spent our lives preparing to be ready, and it just happened to be me who shares the office with my brother and my producing partner."

Yeah, they do stick by it. And maybe it is. I still don't think so, but if it is fictional I'm a little more impressed. They showed a lot of restraint in their direction in that last 1/4. I think that part showed a lot of maturity as filmmakers.

Also, the marketing of this film was entirely wrong and bad. But what else is new?

It's not real.

But it does look good.

I'm on the side that this is real. Read some interviews with these guys and they seem Genuine. Maybe I'm wrong...

Read an interview and they said it started because they just film things all the time. When he started getting the paintings he started filming it every time. Then it developed.

"It was really Rel [co-director Ariel Schulman], Nev's brother, who started filming and had the instinct to do that. I mean, I think it's a lot of reasons – one is that we're kind of full-time documentarians, like there's no moment in our lives when it's not appropriate to film each other and that's kind of the agreement that we have. So if anything interesting happens, it's okay and expected that one of us will film it."

"So at what point did you guys kinda sit down and say, “wait, maybe we actually have something that we can turn into a film.”

Henry: It was that moment in Vail where we find out about the songs. The two of us [nods toward Rel] turned to each other we were like “we should be filming all the time now.” And we basically didn’t stop rolling for a week after that."

Maybe they're just really clever.

Anyways I liked the film.

I can buy that. That's essentially how Exit Through the Gift Shop started. Some people just accumulate footage for its own sake.

Funny that you mention this because I can totally buy Catfish, but I think Exit Through the Gift Shop is a hoax/gag perpetrated by Banksy. But, that's another thread.

I think it ended up that way once it got in Banksy's hands, sure, but I think Thierry Guetta just documenting everything with his camcorder started off innocuously enough. I've run into a few people who knew him from before, and they all say that he just filmed everything with no rhyme or reason; he was just obsessed with recording everyday life.
