Hello!

Sorry but I couldn't find any suiting forum category except this one... I'm looking for a good casting database software and wonder if anybody has a tip. We are a new production company and our database of casted actors is growing and we would like to have them well organized and quickly accessible. The best would be an online solution with offline backup, with abilities to store basic information as well as photos and videos for each actor.

What do yo mean casting database? We can help you set up a database based application, to save/retrieve data in it.

Why not construct your own database using Openoffice (Free software) or LibreOffice (same thing really)? I did this for creating a GUI database for contacts for agents/prodcos for screenwriting (submitting screenplays, etc). Here is a sample screenshot from the database I made. Slight learning curve, but there are tutorials on the web, etc. Or hire someone to put it together, should take someone maybe 10 hrs of work to do something like you see here, including background wallpaper. Then of course you would enter the data records over time. Works nice though for a GUI database, search, contacts, mail merges, etc. There are several kindle ebooks on getting up to speed using Openoffice Base (the database),

You could create a spreadsheet in Google Docs. There are tons of web-based options and all depend on how much effort you want to put into it as well as effort to maintain and use a system. Sometimes the most elegant solutions are never used because they're just too complicated for day to day tasks.

Is that a made up example above or a real actresses details? Usually with databases you're required to treat the data within it with some degree of confidence.

For scripts, it you want a proper website solution check out the likes of http:www.hotscripts.com or http://sourceforge.net/

I noticed there's a commercial IMDB like product, which they offer custom solutions for, so you could asked for a scaled down version more suited to pure casting use:

That is an excellent way to start a database (using a spreadsheet, such as with google docs or Openoffice)-- that is what I did initially, then the spreadsheet can be easily converted to a GUI database if desired (like my screenshot).
