Cast Table Read of Script - Which mic?

Hey guys,

New here but in a bit of a jam. I've been asked last minute to film a cast read through of a script. I've been told that it will take place in a large conference room (presumably around a large table) and maybe a total of 30 people.

Purpose of audio: To be used by the director to play back as an mp3 on his iPod, so he can hear each scene clearly and make mental notes. It isn't for an audience but he needs to be able to hear it clearly.

All I am working with is my DVX100B and it's two XLR inputs.

I need to rent two mics, which I can place strategically on the table top and have them pick up sound in an acceptable manner.

Can you please give me recommendations? The rental house suggested two Shure SM58s but awaiting your word.

Thank you in advance,

Joshua

no, two sm58s is a really bad suggestion. if you want a static table placement, with a uniform response all around, the sm58 will have a really poor response.

i think you have two options:

the first is one or preferably two pzm microphones on the table to give a good uniform response.

the second is one or preferably two omni condenser microphones - even studio type mics would be great here. these mics will be more visually intrusive than the pzms, however.

Ooh yeah, Boundary/Surface Mic on the table, maybe 2 if the table is big enough (maybe an AKG C547BLT would be a good option for this). If you need one camera mounted I think a nice Audio-Technica AT822 Stereo Mic would be great. That one would do very nicely on a short stand on the table as well.

Just my opinion, of course.

Also, if you have an extra recorder, it never hurts to have an extra unit recording. Just a thought.
