Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1

The camera also can record high-definition movies at 1920x1080 pixels at 60 frames per second
Well, that certainly warrants a look! 1080/60p at $1,000? They say it's a "movie mode" so does that mean it's not limited by the 1-second limitation it has in still-camera mode?

the camera can take up to 60 images in a high-speed burst, with different frame rates possible. For example, a photographer can set the camera to take 60 shots in 1 second or 5 shots per second for 12 seconds

looks like it can only do 60frames in a row regardless how fast

Yes, but if you read later in the press release you find the quote I gave, which says that it has a movie mode, so... the question remains... ?

ah, barry i didnt see that first glance over... hmm well i suppose if it doesnt have a length limit in recording that its only limited by the memory card...

I skipped the calculator and went for this one. Back in the 80s, it was still pretty lame. The phone dialer worked about three times - the rest of the time I just looked like a freak as I awkwardly held my watch up to the phone.

"High speed movie recording at up to 1,200 fps
The EXILIM Pro EX-F1 can record high speed movie footage of motion too fast for the human eye, for ultra slow motion playback. Users can select a recording speed of 300 fps, 600 fps or 1,200 fps. There is also a Movie Button that lets users quickly start movie recording without first switching from still image mode."

Dudes... 1200 Frames a second- for under $1000. Why hasn't this board exploded yet?

oops.. your right, it's 336 × 96 at 1200 fps and 512 × 384 at 300 fps, thats no good. another high speed decoy.

As usual, the most complete information on and from the photo world:

This is for our friend Barry:

What about that 1/1.8" sensor?

And that particular offer*...

• Movie: MOV format, H.264/AVC, IMA-ADPCM (stereo)

...here?

* Especially comparing with the HDV & AVC-HD@17Mbps -- without forgetting the HDMI output...

60 fields per second... What does it mean? Is it progressive or interlaced?

I never heard of any still cameras with an interlaced movie mode. Never. And I don't really know why.

Since Sony made the sensor, it's only a matter of time before other companies make high speed cameras like this.

I want it.

60 fields is 60i.

60 fields = 30i

60i would sample at 120 fields per second.
You have to put two "fields" together to make a frame. So 30i would take 60 fields per second, then pair the fields up to make 30 frames per second (interlaced).

That's at full HD resolution, so, a cool feature for a still camera, but nothing too special.

The high speed movie modes are still intriguing though, even though they're working a resolutions below SD. If you're shooting a Standard Def movie, you might not mind the loss in quality if it's only on one or two special effect shots.

512 × 384 (300 fps)
432 × 192 (600 fps)
336 × 96 (1200 fps)

"30i" is antiquated and inaccurate, though it's still used as terminology in some systems which have been around for a long time (like Avid).

"60i" is correct for 60 interlaced fields per second; if you want to be exact, it's 59.94i.

i have an older exilim that does 640x480 at 30p. it looks amazing for what it is. i have actually mixed it with dvx footage with great results. the only drawback is that is is mp4 and heavily compressed so no hardcore cc or keying.

if this new guy is using h.264 and a better sensor, i suspect it will be a monster. this could be the ultimate shot-stealing tool. nobody looks twice at a guy with a point n shoot. if it has a 720p mode, i will rush out and buy one as soon as it ships.
