Casino Royale

A home run! This is exactly what I was hoping for -- a hardcore spy story without gimmicks.

I never doubted Craig and I never gave a rat's patootie what color his hair was.
Hmmmmm. Looks like I'll have to make my return to the franchise. I've seen each incarnation of Bond and still it's only Connery for me. Bond has been nothing more than a cartoon for many years. However, from everything I'm reading I think I might finally enjoy a Bond movie again.

They really made a wonderfully de-gimmicked, de-gadgeted and de-cartoonificated Bond movie, this time. Craig has the sort of hard-edged predatory dangerousness to him, that no one else but Connery put into the role.

SLIGHT SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i really liked the part with the guy trying to blow up the plane and he activates the bomb and he blows up and all Bond does is smirk... that was perfect!

the chair torture scene was hard to watch. "NO!!!!!!!!! TO THE RIGHT!! THERE! RIGHT THERE! Now you will die knowing you scratched my balls!" HAHAHAHA!

I just saw it, and I thought it was excellent. I thought Craig did a really good job as Bond. I really liked the whole parkour style chase towards the beginning, some pretty impressive stuff. It's a great movie, everybody should go see it if you haven't already.

Bond forces someone to scratch his balls, or one of the villains does?

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it was part of the torture scene. LeChiffre is torturing Bond by sitting him in a chair that has no seat, while he's naked, and hitting him in his balls with something on the end of a rope... maybe it was just the rope itself to get him to talk. Bond tells him he's got a scratch "down there, you mind?" and LeChiffre hits him again, but Bond screams "NOO! TO THE RIGHT!" its great if you see it.

Two thumbs up for me...as I had expected.
Craig gave such wicked performances in Road to Perdition, Layer Cake, and Munich...that I had no doubts.
I also grew up on bond films...had most of the films up to mid-80s on Betamax lol! But this movie really brought back the true spirit with an updated feel. I like how they were a bit more subtle...like incorporating parcour/free running in the action sequences without it feeling like a copied tv commercial. Loved the vintage aston martin, the new Aston Martin, the girls, the locations (the Casino exteriors were shot in my mom's home town of Carlsbad in the Czech Republic).
So a big thumbs up here, despite the film being a bit too long. Which is my complaint wth the last 3 films I've seen this week (Babel, The Prestige, Casino Royale).
Cheers,

BB
Looking forward to "The Fountain" next week!

I saw this movie yesterday. I had my reservations about Craig, but he won me over. I think this is one of the best of the Bond films and a great new start for the franchise.

All Bond apologists please turn their computer's off. Now, if you're like me and agree that every single Bond film for the past 15 years has sucked (cars disappearing?? Come on!), but you saw this and you liked it, let me know. Cause the marketing on this film has been awesome. But I remember they duped me a couple of other times with their marketing and the film was terrible. So I'm on the fence. If I do see it, I should probably see it in a theatre.

what's with all this attention on the dude? since I'm not gay, if i see this movie it would be for Eva Green not whateverhisname is.

Bond experts! correct me if I'm wrong, I think Eva Green beats out all the previous Bond girls in the boobs department... oh wait there was Denise Richards... well he beats out all the French Bond girls anyways...

In the last 15 years, I've liked only one of them -- GoldenEye. This was much, much better.

(Of course, in the last 15 years, there's only been Brosnan, so take that for what it's worth.)

This blew me away.

It was how I always wanted Bond to be - a cold hearted cocky bastard, who smashes peoples faces into mirrors, and shoots people Collateral style, then romances the ladyfolk - all without blinking an eye.

He had just the right amount of sheer cockiness, the right bravado, everything just worked. The chase scenes rocked my nuts off - I loved the scene where he chased the black guy with all the free-runner moves.

Also I loved how there weren't any nonsensical motorcycle/helicopter/skidoo etc. chases. It was all running, and just when we think there's going to be a typical car chase through the countryside, BAM Bonds car gets pwned hardcore

What an amazing film. I loved it so much I nearly cried at one point, and I'm not joking, it was so good.

I have to agree with you guys. Great film. I went into this one knowing they were going to tone down the gadgets and hokie one liners and absurd plot lines.

But I was truly suprised at it. Especially "M"'s performance. She was great. Bond was finally back to what he was in the books and should have been. An ass kicking, drinking, smoking, brutal and ruthless killer. It's about bloody damn time.

Best line in the movie:

"Sir, do you want that shaken or stirred?"
"Do I look like a give a damn?"

Awsome.

I hated all the previous bond movies for the last 15 years too - I could not watch more than 10 minuites of the Halle Berry one. This one is different and much better. Certainly watchable and worth paying to see.

If I had to find one criticism of this one, it'd be the score. The music is quite good and obviously top notch but its very traditional full orchestra type stuff. I think it might have been interesting if they had tried to get somebody with edgy/contemporary sounds - like a David Holmes type. This isn't a knock on the composer who is certainly brilliant. I just think it may have been interesting to attempt a different sort of sound for this different sort of Bond.

On Casino Royale,
This has been the first Bond film in a very long time that I've liked. Roger Moore I never enjoyed, he was too swarmy. Pierce Brosnan's only role I've liked was in the Matador, though he was tolerable in Golden Eye.

The movie felt a little long in the middle stretch, but the action sequences were well done, not overly realistic but it made good popcorn cinema.

As far as Daniel Craig, he's far better than some of the other choices that had been flying around, I'm glad they went with someone who can play a darker side. There is very much a character arc with bond in this one, there is a hero's journey and Daniel Craig does the sinister and vunerable well in equal measure. The progression from new and hotheaded agent to a guarded and womanizing double O was great to watch.

As far as his acting, less is more and I like little hints of emotion rather than twisted theatre expressions. He did a perfect South African accent in Munich, was great in Road to Perdition, I will check out layer cake though I've heard bad things.

It gets back to basics there are no Korean sun lasers, space station spores, or the rogue soviet general archtype anywhere to be seen. The villian was excellent, human and certainly understated.

The updates to the book were great, they replaced smersh with something that works equally as well.

The new Felix is great, the one liners are story driven.

in all Honesty aside from the Departed this has been my favorite flick of the year, easily beating out Flags, Marie Antoinette, Hollywoodland or any of the other dozens I've seen recently.

I know no one who didn't enjoy the film even if they had a few small issues,
and I will be seeing it again.

SPOILER!!!!!!!! (kind of, its in the trailers)

Word of advice don't lean over to a ladyfriend, and say "wow, that was so tragic... to see such loss, Its just not fair..... an Aston Martin cut down in the prime of its life..." or "sure Eva Green is pretty but they only made so many Aston Martins" you will get hit.. though that doesn't make it any less true...

Layer Cake is the reason he got the bond part. Not sure what you heard, but Craig is great in Layer Cake.

I'll jump in and agree with the rest of you that this was one of the best bond movies in a long freaking time! Daniel Craig was amazing. For the first time in years, I left the theatre wanting to be James Bond. For me, that's the mark of a great Bond flick. Kudos to getting it right this time. A great reboot for the franchise.

'Layer Cake' is great stuff.

Not a single wasted second or excess frame, in the whole thing...

Just saw it. Knew it was gonna be good, but I didn't realize it would be the best bond film I've seen. I was blown away. Craig did more than reinvent the role, this is the first Bond that feels three dimensional. Great film.

Daniel Craig is really good. The action is awesome, but there is a lot of fat in between. The script is the weakest part, imo.

Le Chiffre and Mr. White are both pussies, and I can't believe James Bond didn't nail that woman before he went to Miami. This has to be the lowest belt-notch total for James Bond in any of the films.
