Cases/transport for wireless lav kits.

I'm a Director/DP not an audio talent but I run a small production company and we have the basics. Boom/shotgun and a few lav kits for when things don't have a budget but we need good audio.

That said, I have yet to find a nice solution for organizing and transporting my wireless lav sets from office to set and especially for air travel. What do you all use for this?

What size soft bags/hard cases are best?

Thx!

Pelican 1500 with the padded divider insert. I would especially want this if I were flying. Nice size. VERY durable and secure.

Edit: Sorry, Make that a Pelican 1520.

I can get a 2 wireless kits with lavs, 2 cardioid condensors with ball gags and suspensions, shotgun with a softie and suspension, a few shorter cables and a bunch of little widgets. I could probably squeeze in a mix-pre or 302 as well if needed.

Can't go wrong with a Pelican (in a color of your choice). I still have one of the early King Pelicans with the fixed handle. Hundreds of trips through airport baggage and other travel abuse since 1990.

Ya, a Pelican case, such as a 1500 or the lighter/newer 1535 Air case should work. I can travel with most of a small sound kit (besides boom poles, extra cables, bigger zeppelin) in a iM2500 Storm Case which is, IIRC pretty much the predecessor to the Pelican 1500.

And like ggrantly suggests, padded dividers (or perhaps TrekPak dividers) rather than the pick-and-pluck foam.

Also, some smaller nice partially see-through gadget bags are handy; get each set of wireless, lavs, mounting gak, etc into its own easy-to store bag. Lots of choices, of course. I use a mishmash of smaller bags now...I may pick up some of these soon.

Hey gang,

Lots of great replies, sorry I wasn't very clear. I have plenty of Pelican cases, 1510s, 1535, etc...but I'm looking for something smaller to store individual lav sets w/mics, vampire clips, batteries, etc...
And then I would use a soft bag or toss that bag into a hard shell case for travel.

Mic kit? Microphone, transmitter, receiver, and cables? Or your receivers are in the mixer bag, and you only want the rest in the Case? Do you want to pack them separately, or all in one case?

Kind of hard to answer, when you do not provide enough information.

I have one Senny. G3 kit in a Pelican 1060 box. It fits just right. I use a little zipper pouch for the mics and cables, which also acts as padding and keeps everything from moving in the box.

Sure. I'm talking about the G3-sized wireless lav kits. I have a few of those and the Sony equivalent that I will often mount to cam for emergency use or when I have no budget to hire a sound mixer.

So the transmitter, receiver, 1-2 cabled mics and the various vampire clips, softies, double-stick tape and batteries it takes to make them go.

Having a hard time finding an organized soft bag or small hard case for that.

Thx!

Not what your asking for but for another idea, I use small plastic cases for my mics and then put them in a pelican clone. Go to 3:59 in this video for a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mniyClIcB7s

There's plenty of different sized plastic cases that may meet your needs. I have 4 sets of Sennheiser G3s and six microphones in the case.

I like them for their size, making the mic storage compact, but you may find them a bit small:

This is a general suggestion rather than something I have done:

Go by a big outdoor supply store (a few years back I would have recommended Walmart, but these days I cannot find what I am looking for in them) and find some of those clear plastic boxes the fishermen love that will just hold one kit. Then get a Pelican type case (look in the gun department) that will hold all the individual kits in the clear boxes for transport to protect them from airline baggage handlers. That way you only have one case to transport, but individual protection for the kits you are actually using.

Another, type of case to look at are photographer's gadget bags. As a former pro photographer, I of course have several of those laying about.

Head over to Best Buy and look in their camera department. They have some smaller camera bags for point n shoot size cameras which I use to store my Sennheiser wireless setups, which then go into my hard cases.

Good idea David. I actually bought some point and shoot bags from Amazon for this but they were all just a touch too small! Need to see some in person. Thx.

Maybe you can't tell from the picture, but those K-Tek Gizmo bags are pretty small and would, I think, work great for what you want.

I was going to second this. These were designed with the idea of putting wireless systems in them with the lav and all the little accessories. The new ones have three sizes. The largest size is a little bigger than the original K-Tek gizmo bag, and then they go down from there. The bottoms are clear so you can see everything that's in the bag without having to open it up, which is nice if you have several of these in a bigger pelican case.
