Cases: Soft & Hard

With all the great information on cases here, I have a couple more questions:
Does anyone recommend a hard case big enough for several accessories and small enough to be considered a carry-on?
I have a storm case iM2600 (Pelican 1550 equivalent) which is a great size, but just too small to fit everything I need.

When traveling, how many of you check your camera in a hard case vs carrying-on? I'm always leery of checking cameras. No matter how well they're packed, they can still get lost through the airlines!

And finally, any comments on these three soft cases? They all look good and I think can be used as carry-ons.

I had the same concerns that you have about 4 months ago. Hard case? Soft case? Check in? Carry-on?

I went with the Pelican 1510 (1514) and I love it. It is considered the largest possible case you can store in the overhead compartment bin on an airplane. Yes, it is FAA approved. It is not huge by any means. It is large enough for the camera, obviously. A few boxes of tapes. Some filters. All of my batteries, and battery chargers. Essential cables. Small mini-dv for a deck. And of course the mic attachements. I COULD squeeze my mic in there as well if I wanted to but I wouldn't ever SQUEEZE a $550.00 mic in anywhere.

I am going to Cali next weekend and I so am relieved I went this route. Last weekend, my girlfriend just came back from NC and her SLR 35mm camera got swiped from her check-in luggage (Last year, my brother in law got his gameboy stolen from his luggage too). There is NO way I am checking this camera in.

It's up to you of course. Sure the bag is very modest in size. But, it's comfortable to carry and extrememly well built. Besides, the more gear you buy, the more likely you are going to wind up getting more cases.

Just my thought...hope this helps.

PS 1510 is the pluck and pull foam. I went with the 1514. Its the EXACT same case except the inside has a cushioned liner with velcro partitions so I can adjust the compartments. Pretty cool.

'overlandfilms' posted about these 'Hardigg Storm' cases recently. They look very nice to me.

For soft bags, nothing on earth matches the 'Cinebags' brand.
