cartoons or animated gifs?

I'm looking to add layers onto my video of cartoon animals. I was thinking of just getting some animated gif's online and moving them around with motion keyframes, but they all have solid color backgrounds to them. Is it possible to key out the backgrounds or is there a better method for achieving this effect?

You could possibly key them out using some sort of key but it probably wont look 2 good especially becasue gif's are so compresses (i dont even think they go beyond 256 colors) You can always try opening it up in fireworks or photoshop or if you have a flash animation in flash to see wether the background layer is removable and then save it as a tif that can hold transparency. A flash file you can export as a video with a codec that holds transparency. No matter what you do you are still using a gif formt eh web which means its most likely horrible quality and it is better to make the animation yourslef out of hihger quality photos. take an image into photoshop of a cartoon animal and slice it up into a few layers and try to animate it that way.

Yeah, there's a way to take out the background color with a program called Flash. If you download a trial version of Flash at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=flashpro you can use it for 30 days without any problems. Then all you need is a license code, and if you PM me I can um, help you out.

Basically, you want to import the .gif into Flash, and it's got a pretty easy interface to negotiate. You should import it and then make the frames as long as the gif plays, and then make each one an individual keyframe by right clicking and clicking on convert to keyframes. Then, select your first frame, go to Modify>Trace..., and then type in your settings, if you want it to be sharp. You have to do it for all the frames. Then, simply click on the background color, it should highlight, and then you can delete it. It will probably export with transparency settings, only they may look black if you export the image in an image viewer. Hope this didn't make things too confusing.
