Cartoni or EZFX

yo,

Cartoni Jib: http://www.cartoni.com/eng/jib.html
EZFX: http://www.ezfx.com/EZFX_Jib/

I've read consistently good things about the ezfx, however looking at the cartoni, it seems a lot nicer and more capable (with the basic configuration at least) than a portajib, which is about $3k. The ball mount can be panned or inverted, it looks like it has enough reach, and seems a lot... well, more refined than the EZFX.

I do plan to buy the crossmount plate from EZFX: http://www.ezfx.com/Special_Application_Jib_Accessories/

I'm not lookig for a remote head, if I need one I'll get an op for the day with a full setup - so this will just be for "hand control" within about a 2 meter range.

Any opinions on the cartoni? I've read many on the AdvantaJib + EZFX, none on the cartoni.

I have repeatedly attempted to will a $1600 AdvantaJib that can carry about 20lbs + extend from 5' to 25' into existance on my doorstep; unfortunately reality stubbornly refuses to capitulate to my demands :P

I have the Cartoni Mini Jib and it's fantastic. I am working a review and will be posting it shortly. Just need to take some pictures of it, that's all.

ok, that's enough for me, buying it on monday :)

So the final kit will be a set of alloy Miller Sprinter II 1580s, a Focus head (Cartoni) and the Cartoni Jib.

Glad you like it, I thought it looked great, and frankly I am much more inclined to trust them than EZFX - they have done some serious camera support engineering.

The Cartoni is totally different then the EZFX. You'll want to use the EZFX if you are ever going to put any camera over 10 lbs. Even thought the Cartoni claims that it accepts much more weight, adding a camera over 10 Lbs. limits the stable reach and makes any kind of smooth movements much, much more difficult. No problems with the EZFX and heavy cams.

Ah, excellent point. The 30lb claim was one of the things that attracted me to it - so if it doesn't work @ 10+lbs I don't want it.

Thanks for the advice.

The cinematographer I consulted before buying my Cartoni Jib had been using an Aaton XTR Prod w/ Canon Zoom Lens on his Cartoni Jib and said it worked fine in the short (non-extended) mode. He went on to say it was a little unstable when extended, but not unreasonably so... But, you're right that a non-extendable jib would probably be a lot more stable overall for a heavier camera.

I've just posted in another thread that we're using our EZFX with XDCam 350s and HVX 200s with incredible results. The XDCam is 18lbs. and we've had very stable moves with the VariZoom MC100 and 6' EZFX extension.

I cannot recommend the heavy-duty pedestal (masterful design) enough for use with cameras over 10lbs.

One thing that is also attractive about the EZFX is it can be extended to quite a large jib with incremental purchases ;)

I did a quick price comparison, and even discounted the cartoni is still more than $200 over the price of the EZFX.

In any case, agh, I think I might have made a decision. The Cartoni is definitely sexier than the EZFX, but... oh well..
