Cartoni Focus Problem

My Cartoni Focus balance spring does not return the head to level. With absolutely nothing on the head it returns to a nose up by about 5 degrees. It should return to level, right?

Thanks,

Bob

the counter balance is not intended to return the head to level instead the counter balance is used to keep the camera from moving when tilted either up or down in other words with the camera tilted down or up the camera should remain in that position when you let go of the pand and tilt handle and your head should be able to do this with a camera weight of up to 22lbs

I fully understand this but to properly do this the head should return the head to level. The problem I am having is that the holding power of the return springs is inconsistent when I am near level because I actually have to shift the camera forward to balance it level.

I'm not sure I fully understand the description of your problem, but here's what I did find with my Focus, and recommend you do too if you haven't already:

Reverse the mounting hardware on the Focus's plate, because the default position puts the HVX's weight too far aft (IIRC - unless it's forward - It's been a while since I fixed it). The balance spring can't adequately compensate for that. Then loosen the leveling spring knob all the way (or nearly) and balance the camera on the head by sliding it fore and aft.

Once you've done that, tighten the balance knob as needed. It should be well able to maintain the camera's tilt in almost any position without drooping.

I hope this helps.
