I've been having a bit of a career path crisis the past couple of weeks and have become pretty confused on which direction I should be going in.
I'm primarily interested in editing. I've worked on a couple shorts with friends and have thoroughly enjoyed editing to script the most. I also love working in AE and have recently begun learning Maya/3Dsmax.
Currently I'm in college for a bachelors degree in visual effects. I've been interested in vfx for a while and originally thought that having a degree to go along with a reel would help me out with finding jobs.
Ultimately my "dream" is to edit for film & TV, but also do some side work on other films with compositing/roto.
However, after explaining this to a professor of mine who has been in the industry for 25 years or so, I've been told that I can basically only pick one. If I work as an editor, the only jobs I'll probably get are editing jobs, and visa versa for VFX.
Is this really the case? I can only pick one or the other?
This is a huge revelation for me if it's actually true, and now I feel as if I'm wasting my time and money being in college for a degree I might never even use.
I guess I'm just looking for some input and advice on whether or not I should stick it out and get my degree or drop it and pick something else. I'm only 2 quarters in at my current school so it won't be too much wasted time if I decide to drop.
