career opportunities

I graduated from college recently and am looking for full time work not freelance. I have been doing event videography for 6 years for my own production company so experience and knowledge really isn't an issue. It doesn't really matter what industry as long as its video production or post production. I have started looking and applying but there really doens't seem to be much out there or atleast not one good cenetral job listing website. I am in the NY/NJ area does anyone have any suggestions how to get started.

your probably in one of the strongest but most competitive markets in the country. Yes, it seems like most jobs are freelance, and not just there, but all across the country as well. It just seems to be the nature of the industry. If you did a poll here of how many people work a "9-5" in video production, you would probably be suprised how many people have to rely on other fields to pay the bills.

I would say if you wanted to break into an industry, such as editor, you might have to take a step back (such as assistant editor) to move forward. For some reason, event work doesn't hold the same clout as corporate or commercial experience.

Take the freelance gigs and start networking. Many staff positions are filled by former freelancers. Like Cecil said, there aren't a lot of staff positions available. If you put yourself out there "in the loop" so to speak, you'll know when and where a staff position is open.

Yeah, event experience doesn't carry much weight in the industry. Event videographers are a dime a dozen. I agree with Cecil about taking an assistant editor position if it's offered.
