car rigs

anyone have any experience w/ the dvCarRig or any other similar set up? did a search and the only thing i've read was on the stickypod which got decent results. thanks!

yeah i just check out their site. i think a dvxuser purchased a rig from them and had photos. possibly kai? so many different components so it's a little confusing. will check it out again and do a comparison.

i recently used a 10" suction gripper that had a cheese plate and ball mount on it for the cam. then we used 2 smaller cups (6") with gobo's, arms and cardellini's (one holding the camera handle, the other holding the corresponding arm) and arranged them so they were all about 90 degrees from each other. i believe these cups can all be purchased from film tools, relatively inexpensively.
it worked just fine. the camera wasn't going anywhere. however, it is worth noting that if you're working in the cold, you will want to double and triple check the cups - or if you're placing them on the hood, let the car run a few minutes so it's a little warmer and provides a better suction surface.

I have the $170 filmtools "Gripper" or whatever they call it.

I like it. It's a well constructed piece of equipment, complete with a quick-release plate and a pump mechanism for the suction cup. I've used it several times without any problems.

If I were filming something more than a typical car mount shot (say, something involving race cars and high-G forces) I would spring for the optional support bracket. That doubles the price but adds a couple more suction cups and mechanical support. A nice feature of the Gripper is that it's upgradable in this fashion.

The stickypod is fine. They are a site sponsor. The construction is not as robust (fewer professional features) but it's cheaper. It has four suction cups, so your camera's not going anywhere.

We just bought the medium kit from film tools last week. We have done two shoots with it and for $1595 it is good stuff. I like the set up sence I can put a camera on the car where ever I want. The cups are strong and even at high speed turns i didn't feel the camera was in danger.

I've got the filmtools "Gripper"....can't recall which model, but it was $180 when I bought it. For $250 more you can upgrade it with a "tie down kit" to reduce harmonic vibration. Overall I've been pleased with the device. The solo suction cup concerns me, but so far no DVX has been splattered on asphalt.
