car rig. bean bag. rope.

Excellent. I just realized that I missed one of the paragraphs of your first post.

Maybe I'll run into harbor freight tomorrow. Great design.

After having built it, I ran across the Sticky Pod. I think it looks like a pretty good deal for $79. I think the suction cups it uses will conform better to curved surfaces, but that is a guess. If I were to have bought a sticky pod, I would have put a handle on it so I could secure a tie-down strap on it.

But I like my pan head a lot better than the Sticky Pod, and mine cost less.

Having a pan head is pretty good. Was yours cheaper than the stickypod? It's $59 which seems damned cheap. Although I'd get the extension so that I could use it to shoot in through the driver/passenger window.

I think the sticky pod is a good deal. It seems to be designed well, and I think the suction cups are better than the ones I am using. In fact, I saw some similar ones used for pulling auto-body dents for about $5 a piece that I might end up picking up. You can read a review of the sticky pod at TomsHardware.

I put my monopod handle on my homemade car mount, so now I have a pretty rad setup.

BTW, mine was about $59, but that is without the additional monopod head (IOW the 3-way pan head only, see the pic for a view of both heads). I think the stick pod is well engineered, but I've never used one so I can't really compare. I definitely like the sticky pod's suction cups. I would think you would need two swivels and a rod in order to use it on the side peering in, etc (so that would cost a lot more than $59).

Okay, so the pic sucks. What you are looking at is a pistol grip monopod head with the 3-way pan head mounted on top of it. This allows for ultimate positioning of the camera so it can be mounted to the side of the car looking in the window, raised, lowered, pushed forward, backward, etc. This is really useful for getting the camera right in front of the windshield etc.
