Any recommendations for a good and affordable place near the airport to rent a car? We're -from the Netherlands- in pre-production for a doc over there.

Sorry I don't have any help for you for the car rental thing. But I did have a question for you. Where in the Netherlands are you if I may ask? I live like 20 min from the border here in germany. And I wouldn't mind hooking up and collaboratiing on any projects you have going on there...if you're interested.
 
Check out a site like travelocity.com, orbitz.com, or cheaptickets.com. It should give you a wide variety of car rental options, both by company and vehicle size. My experience is that the major national rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Dollar, National, etc.) are just as cheap (and easier to deal with) as smaller regional companies.
 
I've always flown into Midway and rented from Hertz. Any of the major players should work well for you, though.
 
If you are flying into O'hare and If you are driving in to the city, be prepared for traffic depending on time of day and make sure you have cash for the Tolls.
If you somehow find yourself stuck in the Ipass lane(where you cant use cash just the electronic transponder) just keep moving nothing will happen (unless you are speeding insanely) you can go through them 15 times before they send you(rental company) a ticket. You are supposed to pay for any previous tolls you may have missed at the next one you come to...
