car mount

I was looking at some of the car mounts on the film tools web site and was wondering if anybody had any experiences with any of the suction systems, they look a little scary to me

Re: car mount

No, sure haven't. I've used the CineSaddle, which is a whole different way to go about it -- it's a bean bag with rope & hooks for mounting to a car. Works excellently. Glass-smooth shots.

Re: car mount

I was at the Filmtools display outside the Videomaker expo, where they had all their devices mounted to a car. I hung my full weight on one of their triple-suction mounts and couldn't pull it off (200lbs. ;)) I think you'll be okay. Also, you can always wrap safety cables around the camera.

Rush, I was at the same expo there display rocked!! I am leaning to there inside of car set-up more versitality. 8)

Re: car mount

I used a cine saddle with a Cine Alta HDW-F900 on the front & back of a London taxi cab for driving plates. Works well and straps solid to anything.

Cool stuff too. When I think of all the heck we used to have to go through to mount a camera to a car, and now its so easy... ::)

Good Lord, that sounds precarious, but I guess it worked... It's just such an expensive camera.

Re: car mount

Those suction cups have quite the punch. Here is only 1 suction cup: and it holds its own very well, I have 3 of them, and with all three, your not gonna be able to move that thing.

Re: car mount

I've had one of these for awhile: http://www.stickypod.com

Haven't managed to use it yet though. It seems fairly sturdy for keeping the camera on the car, but I have doubts about whether it'll keep the camera aligned during, say, an auto-x course or a track day.

Re: car mount

My carmount design uses suction cups, and I've never had any problems at all. I wouldn't worry about it as long as the car is clean where you do the attaching! And eventhough these are big suction cups that most car mount use, they still benefit from spit around the edge to get a good seal!

I was looking at the Cine Saddle. But it seems I saw another company with the same bean bag mount design for a tad cheaper. I think I saw it on the B&H web site, but can't find it now. Thought I had bookmarked it, but guess I didn't. Anyone have a clue as to what the other bean bag product is besides the Cine Saddle?

http://www.filmtools.com/ - looks like the same deal, this is just their standard site. I purchased two of filmtools' gripper488 series for my feature docu about the vw culture. Those things stood up to quite a beating. With just the simple single 6" suction cup mounts we were strapping cameras to 900+hp race cars going practically full tilt on the track. We did some "independent" test upwards of 100mph with no problems except for a bee that found its way inside a lens assembly. for the love of god make sure you have a uv filter on there before going out! I used one again on a short I DP'd for - much more simple setups and slow moving, but I used it on the hood and pointed it toward the windshield - it gave a great result since the camera only moves with the car's suspension, so it had this very early cinema look - almost like the background was rear projection. Overall they are completely useful, I use them alot simply because sometimes a tripod wont fit where one of these little guys can fit about anywhere. and inside the cabin especially! any non-porous surface will work. Also i like these models because they use the traditional bogen mounts and plates, so interchanging heads and other equip is a breeze. the little grey pump/indicator is also a nice feature to make sure your suction is up to par...
