Car Lighting

What should I use to light the inside of a car. In Collateral the taxi was lit with the strips used in cell phones. I wonder where I can get some of those.

I like using Christmas tree lights if I have to work on a budget. I keep green, blue, orange(hard to find), and white xmas tree lights in my road kit. You do need a power adaptor, but you will need one any way unless you are lucky enough to have mini-flos.
Use show cards cut into small rectangles as your reflectors. TAPE them any where.

I've had great results,

Enjoy

As a semi-good alternative to mini-flo's, you can get under the counter flourescents in varying sizes, some are battery operated which could be good for car shots. Just paper-tape them wherever you want. I also like rope light as opposed to christmas lights. I just find them more managable.

bear i mind that those lights are tungsten balanced and the flos need minus green on them.

i have the 12v kino car kit and love it!!!
however, I just saw a new product at cinegear I intend to buy called the rololight. low consumption and can work on an inverter. brings 8 lights to a kit in your choice of three sizes

In Collateral, they also used velcro everywhere in the car, so they could put small lights where ever they wanted them....

Are you shooting night or day car interiors? For day interiors I've heard of people putting white towels everywhere (out of shot of course) to boost the interior ambience of the car.

Great idea on the towels, they also would serve as additional sound baffle for audio reasons when shooting in a moving car.

I second the cheap flourescent light. I bought a one inch thick flourescent car trouble light. It was about 7500Kelvin so I wrapped it in CTO twice. I was in a semi. I used 2 elastic bands to hold it between the sunvisor and the roof. This also acts as a bit of a snoot: It fires at the driver, but doesn't light up the dash below him at night. And it runs off the cigarette lighter. And since it was a foot wide, I got a nice soft light that wasn't glaring into the truck driver's eye's too badly so he could still drive at night.

I have mini flo kit which is great, but a DC/AC converter hooked up to the battery with a 2' kino is great...if you don't have the money for those go with the christmas lights you can also take a full string and put them in a sheet of bounce card that is folded to for a 45 degree opening or so. Use some clear packing take to hold it to that opening...works really well sitting on the dash towards the driver or passenger.

Previously I've lit a car using and under the counter flo for the driver with some diffusion on it, a frezzi minifill, for the guy in the the second row, and a flouro shop light with cto on it for the guy in the rear, there's a picture somewhere on this forum, can't find it right now.
