Car Crashing Into Person

Hey Everyone, I've been reading this forum forever but never actually bothered to join.

We've been shooting a short, and I just can't get a stunt right. I've searched these forums and Google for hours on end and can't find anything (I'm sure someone will point out that I'm an idiot and it's at this URL: "..." In any event, I need a POV shot of my character getting struck by a car (night). We've tried a dummy, we've tried leaving the tripod instead of an operator and the actress... nothing is convincing, no matter how much manipulation I put forth in AE and FCP. I'd rather get this while shooting than make it in post (because I'm terrible at AE). Any help would be really, really, really appreciated!

One of the members here, Snodart, has a test clip on his site for a car impact.

Jack Daniel Stanley put together a pretty good effect for a guy getting plowed by a car in his short 18 seconds, viewable on his site here.

Might help for you to frame through these scenes and see how they did it, I think both used After Effects to keyframe the body getting knocked away.

Just realized you need a POV and these are both wide shots...Hmmm.

What about having someone roll off the roof down the windshield and reversing it?

Although I think a dummy could be done quite nicely with good cutting. Don't linger on it but if you cut from the wide impact (as shown in the two examples I listed) to a super quick shot of a dummy being thrown at the windshield from the POV of the driver while he slams on the brakes, and then cut quickly to his reaction....I guess I should ask, why didn't it work when you tried it?

Thanks for the reply, Jared. The dummy was funny business. I actually was not overseeing at that point, but what they did was string it to a boom, and it was pretty much downhill from there.

Those links are both great examples of AE compositing, which I would have loved to do, if it weren't POV. The whole thing is shot POV, so I would hate to break it for one shot. I like your idea of reversing a car roll over. I think I'll throw it to the group and see how it fares.

And man, do I want a Brevis. 18 seconds is beautiful.

Breaking POV

Breaking POV

I've given up and we're going to break the POV for the very end. Just shot the two shots to composite a few minutes ago, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks again for the tips.
