Capturing with a low cost camera and heads wearing down: a problem?

Okay first, I would like to present my excuses for beating once again on a dead and rotting horse of a subject, but having searched the forums I still haven't found an answer that satisfies me.

I am in the process of buying myself a starting set of equipment for filming... (DVX 100B is what I went for, and I am mostly going to film at 24pA)

... and with around 500-600$ canadian left for a video capture equipment, I figure I have to go for the ''cheap camera for capture'' route.

I told this to the salesman and technician who sold me the DVX, and he told me that using such a camera (in the 500$ range) for capture would wear out the heads quite rapidly (with all the fast fowarding, rewinding and playing it has to do). I told him also about the need (or is it preference?) of a camera that is able to display timecode, and he also told me that the price range in such a case increases considerably.

This concerns me greatly, and I need other opinions on the matter, from people who are actually capturing their footage with a small and cheap mini DV camera. Actual brand and model that are good for the capture job, the timecode display matter (can't seem to find which camera does and which doesn't) and if the heads wearing down really is a serious problem at all... I want to be better informed.

As a starting point, I was considering the JVC GR-D250 model, which you can read about here: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/JVC-GR-D250-Camcorder-Review.htm

The same article talks about some other entry level MiniDV camcorder.

Thank you.

The salesman has his head up his ass! Find another.

Would he prefer you put that damage on the DVX then a cheap camera? A cheap camera as a deck will last a long time. Almost all display timecode. I use a used Panasonic pvdv151 off eBay [$60] and the time code is fine. many use a canon z with no probs

I am using the Canon ZR100 as my playback deck. It has worked flawlessly for that purpose.

I'm guessing he wants to sell me a 1000$ deck.

As far as the heads wearing down issue, I'm wondering, is it actually the heads getting dirty (easily fixed) or the heads mechanically breaking down with use...
I didn't ask him the question.

How long is a long time...

To be honest I'm not sure. 500 - 1000 hours minimum I guess- But @ $300 if it craps out after a year or so.... You don't need new. A used one at half the price will work too. Just clean the heads and you're good to go.

If you plan to edit 10 tapes a week you might want to consider a deck - Otherwise a cheap cam is all you need. Sounds like you plan to shoot your own movies so a deck is a luxury IMO

One last question... I recon the Panasonic master quality tapes and cleaning tape won't be a problem for another brand of camera (such as JVC) ?

They'll be fine. Just pick one BRAND and stick with it. It's a lube thing.
