Capturing/Using Various Footage Types

I just got my new DVX and I'm still kinda shakey on all the different buttons and stuff. Basically, I've accidently shot things in a bunch of different formats, namely some in 24p and some in 60i. Eventually these shots need to go into the same project, so what can I do? I realize it won't look perfect, but that's my own fault.

A related question is about capturing different formats. If I capture something shot in 24p in a 24p project, is the avi that's saved to the computer specifically 24p? And what about if I capture some 60i footage in a 24p project? Basically, I guess my question is does the framerate of a clip depend on the project it is imported into, captured with, or independent of any premiere project?

Hopefully that doesn't sound too confusing, but I'm just not sure what do with all these new options at my disposal! Thanks for any help.

Nope, your 60i footage will come out 60i even if it's captured in a 24p project. In fact, all 24p footage are captured as 60i until they have their pulldown removed. As to editing, the main thing that will change is the speed at which your footage moves. Editing 60i in a 24p timeline will cause your footage to run at 75% of its original speed due to the six extra frames and editing 24p in a 30 frames timeline will cause footage to run 25% faster. If you have dialogue, this can be a problem. But if it's action, the difference won't be too huge.

Thank you for the info, that is very helpful. It leads me to another confusion I have. I understand the concept of pulldown, but I don't actually understand how it actually comes about happening. You say that "all 24p footage are captured as 60i until they have their pulldown removed." So when does this pulldown happen? Do I have to initiate that process somehow, or are you speaking about something which is automatic?

Also, does 30p footage behave the same as 60i footage in a 60i project? Where does deinterlacing come into play? Does it effectively convert 60i into 30p? Is there a difference between deinterlaced 60i and 30p footage (visually or functionally speaking)?

Again, thanks for helping this newbie!

Assuming you're using Premiere Pro 2.0,
Premiere removes the pulldown automatically when you import your 24p footage into a 24p project. 30p footage is edited in a 29.97 timeline, using the DV presets. De-interlacing 60i will will not look nearly as good as 30p footage.

General rule of thumb
Shoot 24pa...edit in a 23.976 timeline.
Shoot 24p, 30p, 60i...edit in a 29.97 timeline

This is a loose rule and I break it often. I'm assuming you're using PP 2.0, which handles 24p footage well. If you're using 1.5, smash it and get 2.0. Have fun.
