capturing to external hard drive

Hello all. I'm trying to capture onto an external hard drive (Lacie 250 gig, firewire) but keep getting timecode breaks as I capture. Is this common?? Should I switch my scratch disk in FCX back to my imac's internal drive then copy my files onto the the external? Please help. Thanks.

If you are utilizing the same 1394 capture port (or same controller) you can have some serious problems trying to capture video and write it to an external hard drive at the same time. Either use a different port (on a different controller, not just a different connector) for the HDD or write to an internal drive, then move it to the external HDD after the capture has been completed.
