Capturing Technique

Hey guys,

I haven't had time to go thru the tutorials etc... but was just wondering if anyone had any recomendations for capturing/archiving video.

The plan is to dump HDV off my camera, and storing a backup on my HD (and DVDs) for editing purposes.

the problem: I start capturing a 'full' tape, walk away, and when I get back there are only certain clips that are automatically split for me (i assume clips that had like a small bit of empty space on the tape between them).

Any rate... I was wondering if it's possible to sit down as the video captures and then hit some sorta special key as special portions come up that splits that video during the capture?

-or-

Do I just do what i"ve done in past and capture a section.. stop.. rewind a few second, then capture the next section, stop rewind a few seconds, capture, etc...

-or-

Is there a way to create a 'log' (i just noticed there's some sorta clip log window), before capturing, set up my in's and out's, then hit 'capture' and walk away?

-or-

Any suggestions or links to resources or terminology... i find sometimes the answers are out there... I just don't know what the terminology is to use a key word search :)

thanx,

james

May want to check your preferences/settings ... maybe there's something that's not checked, but the fact that it is seperating out SOME of your clips leads me to believe it's a time code issue or something else on the recorded tape/camera you're using.

Vegas should (does for me, and most others at least) automatically capture/log your individual clips.

A side note, I absolutely would not waste the time backing up your video onto DVD's as well, unless you simply want to take all that extra time & expense. Your tape is your back up, unless it's video you KNOW you'll use over & over and will always want. Otherwise, once you're done with a project, you'll find you'll rarely need most video ever again ... so the tape is a fine archive. Perhaps make some kind of note of how you named the clips, so if your harddrive DOES crash, but you still have the Veg. file, then you can just upload the clips again and the Veg. should recognize everything & place appropriately within the project once opened again.

Maybe it is a timecode issue.

(I just didn't know if it had to do with me playing back video on the camera, then stoping it before the clip ended, and then shooting the next bit of footage so they kind of overlap, I thought maybe Vegas would interpret that as one single clip 'cause there is no blank space between clips... but if I stopped recording, didn't touch anything, then start recording again, that there was a small space between clips on the tape in which Vegas could determine was a diff. clip).

thanks.
