Capturing Stills

I want to capture some stills from a live feed through my dvx. Ive captured some stills already, but the quality is poor. How do I set up for the best quality still capture?

this is what im getting...

no effects are added...detail settings are:

detail level +5
v detail level 0
detail coring +2

btw, thank you so much david for the help in both threads :) im missing FCP so bad 2nite trying to get a stupid photo slideshow together on vegas. Everything is so new. Once again thank you.

im previewing on both my 19' monitor and a small "preview" tv...same results in both. I tried capturing another photo, with the preview screen on "best" just in case i missed it before and same results. On the dvx, the pictures look amazingly crisp, but now when i capture i get this...

What I mean is, are you looking at the DVX footage on a TV? The LCD is not esepcially reliable for focus-check, because it's too low of a resolution.

What's the difference between the two?

Are you taking shots of photographs with your DVX?

Are saying that the still created by Vegas looks worse than what's in the preview window? Shouldn't be. It should be exactly what you see.

thats why im asking if theres a way to make it better. Is this the quality i should be recieving? would using 24p make it better?

When you save stills from the preview window, it should be WYSIWYG (unless you monkey with settings which I'll bet you haven't). There should be no difference between what's in the preview window and the JPEG or PNG it creates -- it should be pixel-for-pixel identical.

If this isn't the case, tell me, as detailed as you can, the steps you're taking to produce these stills.

im not saving stills, im capturing photos DIRECTLY from my dvx. picture -> dvx -> firewire -> Sony Video Capture...these stills ive posted in this thread are my results...

EDIT: after re-reading my first post, i can see my use of words are very poor...sleep 2nite should take care of that problem

Let's back up. Where does it start to get bad? Once it's captured?

Remember, though, that DV is very low-resolution, much lower than the photgraph, especially in color space. Even under the best of conditions, the photos aren't going to look as good as shot by the DVX as they do in real life.

The computer screen is only going to exacerbate the problem, because the computer screen is much higher resolution than the DVX and also the TV you're previewing on. It's going to show artifacts and limitations that you won't see in the DVX LCD or DVX footage sent to a TV.

To be honest, now that I know that it's what you're doing, it doesn't surprise me that the photos look like that.

its bad before its even captured, looks great on the dvx, but not on the video capture program...so im guessing that what i see on my monitor is the final product, even though the photos look amazing on my dvx LCD. Correct?

then im guessing the answer to my next question (whats the best way to capture a photograph) would be a scanner?

Correct.

Without a doubt.

Well you are now my favorite dvxuser.com member :) Thank you for wasting your time with my problems.

im guessing the Ultimate S 2.0 is the package that includes everything? expect a sale in the immediate future.

It's got all the tools, but the various ReelPaks (film looks) and GrafPaks (lower thirds) are sold separately.
