capturing sound of moving car

i'm afraid to ask this question, as i fear the answer will be embarrassingly simple, but how do I capture the sound of a moving car (on a highway), without getting all that cheapy-sounding camcorder wind noise? I have an external mic. Do just put a wind screen on it and point it towards the engine?

So your getting just the car sound?

This is actually a really good question.

To get the best sound, you'll need at least a four track recorder, and here's why.

Typically sound effects recordists will put a mic under the hood, a stereo pair in the passenger compartment, and another on the tailpipe.

I would use a sanken cub-1 inder the hood, some sort of decent stereo pair of mics on the inside, and then a sennheiser mke2 on the tailpipe.

hey dave, thanks for the answer. I'm not a sound guy so I don't have any of this equipment. Is there an online alternative for downloading this sound?

what I do is use a wireless lapel mic (Sony) and place on the cars body close to the tail pipe.

Works well for me, since there is no wind blowing on the mic there.

Thanks,
Derrick
