Capturing Question

I've got a panasonic dvx100b and the footage I've got looks incredible on the LCD monitor, but when I capture it through premiere, and play the files, which are around 5-6 gigs, it looks terrible. I've got a new computer with a great video card and nice/fast monitors. Is there something I'm supposed to do to the video after it's captured to make it look good? :( Maybe compression?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Be sure you are capturing in the default Windows AVI format. (in fact, I don't think you can even capture in anything else...) I've never heard of this problem before. -- To answer your question: No, you shouldn't have to do anything to your footage after you capture it. It should look just fine if you captured correctly.

What do you use to watch the clips with? Remember that the actual resolution of SD video is only 480x720 pixels (NTSC), if you make your monitor window larger than that it looks bad. Conversly, the LCD display is about half of the real resolution, of course it looks sharp on that.

What really counts is what it looks like on TV. Monitor the Premier output on a decent standard TV set using the DVX100 (DV-in from Premiere to camera, camera to TV with componet out). This way you see EXACTLY what the video looks like while you edit.

There is also the difference between PC display and TV, on TV videos look usually brighter and more saturated than on the PC monitor. For that reason you should never make any color/brightness corrections without the above mentioned TV monitoring. Or to jump any other hasty conclusions about the quality of the material.

"only miniDV"? From the tape it looks better than broadcast reception... That what is should look like.

DV, mini or not, equals or betters Beta SP, which used to be the best broadcast quality format before digibeta was invented.
