Capturing Problem

About a month ago..i was in Canada...my uncle had an FX-1...so i decided to fiddle around with it..i put my tape in and set it SD signal and i put the 24p feature on..now im back home and i wanna capture the tape..i put the tape in my camera...its a consumer cam btw...and i went to go capture..i clicked capture and then the video plays on the preview...but my computer then starts to lagg like a mofo and then i see the dropped frames counter start going crazzzy.

I saw Daves 24p tutorial...it says it can capture 24p wit no problem...jus click capture and Vegas takes care of the rest.

How can i fix my problem??

Well, first of all, it's not actually 24p. But yes, once you get it into Vegas and on the timeline, Vegas will have you covered.

It sounds, though, like your problem may be mechanical. You might be having problems with the tape, the camera, the firewire connection, or your hard drive.

Have you tried capturing anything else from that camera?

What kind of a drive are you capturing to?

I did try another tape..and it was running smoothly.

Its the computer hard drive..Im not sure wat kind of drive it is (the company)..iduno how to check..but it never gave me problems in the past..only when i tried this tape...and the thing is..the tape i used in the FX-1 was brand new.

Yeah its fine. No dropouts or anything.

I hope i dont run into this kind of problem when i get my DVX..cuz that would just suck....muchh

Could it be cuz the FX-1 framerate?

Then there shouldn't be any problem capturing, if the other tape works.

Try it again and see if you get the same result.

I just tried capturing about 1:30 secs of the tape....still have the problem...but i let it go anyway..then in the last 30 seconds...it started working fine...then it started with the drop frames maddness again...

Wat framerate does the FX-1 shoot at when you put on the Cineframe feature on?

For this, the framerate doesn't matter. If it plays fine in your consumer camcorder, then it's straight DV on tape, and there shouldn't be any problem capturing it.

From everything I've been able to determine, the Cineframe24 mode shoots 60i, does a reverse telecine on the footage, then does another telecine with that. It's like on-the-fly conversion of 60i to 24p, then adding pulldown to the 24p and taking it back to tape as 60i.

So, it being recorded to tape as 60i, and your consumer cam being able to play it, there should be no problem capturing it.

What kind of a hard drive are you capturing to?

No..its in the computer...it came with the computer when i originally bought the comp. Like 3 years ago

Then it sounds like you may have a physical problem with the tape -- it's stretched, or otherwise slightly damaged.

What should i do then? It was a brand new tape out of the wrapper when i put it in.

Should i call Sony and complain? cuz it was a sony tape...

How many times have you played it, though? Repeated plays will stretch the tape.

If you can get ahold of another camera, try that one. But it really sounds like there's a problem with the tape.

As for what to do, I'm not sure. Complaining to Sony won't get you your footage.

You can try to capture in chunks. You said parts of it will capture OK.

I recorded it to tape on the FX-1..then i came back home and played it back on my camera...looked good..then i decided to capture..then it started happening.

but it most likely is the tape then.....this sucks....

yeah parts of it work...only for like a good 5-10 seconds...hmm maybe i should try using my school's deck...it could work there...

Today i stopped by my school's tv studio...i tried capturing the footage there....it didnt work either..same problem...and they use FCP and Avid...i tried on both.....both of the programs had problems..

so im guessing all my footage is gone to crap..

...is it possible to project Mini DV tape footage using a special projector? like i take the tape and take all the film out inside and put it on a projector and capture it by filming a projected wall?
..some sort of digital projector maybe??

I had a tape that I could play and watch on a monitor but couldn't capture because I was having all kinds of problems with what appeared to be broken timecodes. Fortunately, I have an nNovia Quickcapture unit. I put it in VTR mode and played the tape in the VCR mode out to the Quickcapture. It gave me two digital clips which I then copied onto my computer.

Try this --

Record from DV cam to DV cam (or deck). Try to capture the new tape.
