capturing letterbox with Matox RTx100

Whe capturing letterbox footage from my DVX cameras in a Matrox RTX100 DV standard (4:3) project, the footage is intepreted as, captured as widescreen, 16:9, and not 4:3.

To corect this I have go to "Interpret footage" and select the 4:3 Pal option.

I was wondering whether or not this affects the quality of the captured image, and whether or not there is a way of avoiding this?

I am shooting "letterbox" which is 4:3 masked top and bottom, but my matrox card is interpreting the footage as 16:9 even though I am capturing in a 4:3 project.

If you apply effects to the footage without first re-interpreting to 4:3, the image stretches.

if you try capturing letterbox in a 16:9 project - you get a stretched image, with masking still visible.

What settings do you use - should you use - to capture "letterbox" footage?

Make sure you don't have your project setup as widescreen. The Matrox shouldn't interpert the footage as 16:9, as the DVX doesn't flag it as such when shooting 4:3 letterbox.

I think the DVX does flag it as 16:9 and creates the PAR as such.

Interpret footage is no problem really and you can select multiple clips in the project window and apply it in one go.
