Capturing into Vegas with different camera

This may seem a dump question but here goes:

I've shot footage on DVX100 on the 24pa setting. If I use another camera that isn't a 24p camera when I'm capturing does this do anything to the raw footage? Does the deck or camera matter when capturing or will the look be the same since it was shot 24p?

Yes. It will look the same.

The only problem you may run into is that the other cam may not accurately convey the pulldown cadence, if at all. But it probably won't be a problem. It won't affect the look at all.

You should be able to, if it's not a really old cam. Try it and see.

Otherwise, you can use the DVX. Or a fairly new deck.

I never use my DVX ... just askin' for more wear on the heads if you do. I purchased a cheap ($300) little JVC just for that purpose, and it works great.

To make sure I'm clear on this (thanks for your patience guys) if I shot it 24p and I use another cam that isn't a 24p cam it will still capture as 24p?

While we're being clear, let's be REALLY clear.

I understand what you're asking -- can you get useable, true 24p footage when capturing from other than a 24p camera -- and the answer is, most of the time, yes (as stated above).

But when you capture, you will capture as 60i, and then Vegas will remove the pulldown when you drop the clip on a 24p timeline. The pulldown is not removed at capture.

Vegas needs certain info in order to remove the pulldown properly, automatically. Some older or cheaper cams may not be able to convey that information properly -- but this will be a small minority of cams.

If you run across one that can't, the pulldown can still be removed, but it would be done manually.

So, you're probably going to be fine.
