Capturing HD CAM to DVCAM

I'm about to transfer widescreen 23.976 HDCAM to a DVCAM deck, will the image be squashed using widescreen pixels so I get the extra resolution, or will it be cropped?

Secondly, is there anyway to reverse the pulldown and edit back in 24p? So I'm not working with interlaced video?

I know it'd be best to do an online...but this time that's not in the budget. Any suggestions re: capturing off the DVCAM deck would be greatly appreciated too.

THanks

Cal

When you make the DVCAM dubs from HDCAM, the deck has three setting for you to choose from:

1. 16:9 Anamorphic (all pixels used)
2. 16:9 letterbox
3. 4:3 center crop (lose the sides)

Your DVCAM will have 2:3 NORMAL pulldown in it. Follow directions of your NLE for NORMAL pulldown removal in order to edit at native 23.976. You don't mention what you're going to use.

If no online, you can choose to work in native DV25 or uncompressed SD depending on the deck you are using for capture - If your program is fairly simple as in not a lot of effects needing to be rendered, etc. then DV25 is fine. Too bad you can't go back to the HD for the final master.

Hey MichaelP, thanks for your reply.

For highest rez i should chose 16:9 anamorphic right?

I'm going to capture through firewire into either Avid Express Pro HD or Premiere Pro. (premiere is on the table 'cause it makes working in aftereffects super easy) Is there one of these programs that is better re: image quality capturing?

I would really appreciate you talking me through this, it's my first time working with any format other than miniDV and it's super confusing, and expensive.

I'm probably not going to do an online 'cause i dont have the several thousand dollars that'd cost to get done. We got the cam on an incredible discount, and i'm paying for this video out of my own pocket. That being said...could I use the timecode of the 29.97 DVCAM tape to do an online of the 23.97 HDCAM material without buring in the numbers on the DVCAM tapes? I'd love to have the option, but also have a usable master if I can't afford to go back to HDCAM.

Can you explain getting the footage back to progressive 23.97?

We're doing the transfer to DVCAM tommorow morning so any info you have would be super helpful!

Thanks so much!
