Hello guys,
If I need to grab some footage from commercial DVDs is there a special converter that I need to unlock it - also have tried VHS tapes through my SONY deck - digitizing and they were horrible and at times wiggling like I was watching a different TV system (Secam or such)...
thanks for your help.

Hi Barry -
I am doing something for Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward from their own DVDs they handed me - it's for a lecture she's giving in NY. You're saying there's no pro machine that could capture parts of DVDs?

I'm saying they're copy-protected, so they're designed to not be copyable.

There are of course ways around the copy protection, but I don't know of any legal ways around it. Nor have I looked. But if you had an analog video capture station that removes macrovision protection, you could digitize it that way.

Actually the macrovision protection will prevent you from doing an analog capture as well. The scene will get progressively darker.

Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward should be able to make a few calls to get permission to use the footage legaly.

You will then have to convert the VOB files to a format that your NLE will understand if that is your intent.

..if they own the DVD,s they should have or be able to get an un-copy protected version or some original footage for usage from the production co.

or .. alternatively you could just smash their dvd with a hammer and then tell them it doesnt work and you dont know why.

but i think your best off telling them to get you the original materials.
