Capturing footage from VHS / DVD

Up to this point I have been capturing all of my footage from a DV deck. There is also a DVD player and a VHS pplayer available. Is the workflow as simple as unplugging the DV deck and hooking up the other device and logging and capturing as usual, or do certain settings need to be changed?

Well the simplest way is to dub from other sources to DV tape first, then log and capture that tape. That way you have a timecode reference. Capturing from DVD's is an issue though. On DVD's that aren't of material you made yourself, you'll face not only Macrovision protection but it's against the law. So be sure to stick with your own footage.

copyright is not an issue in this case (it's for a school project).

dubbing the VHS footage to DV is not an option.

Right next to the DV deck is a VHS player. Isn't there a simple way to capture from the VHS player just as I would from the DV deck? I need to capture some b-roll which is on the tape.

Capturing from a DVD: MPEG Stream Clip. At least for your school project, it'll get the job done. Just drag and drop the VOB(s) into the grey box with blue circles. You can set in and out points and even select what format you export as (I'd go with generic DV codec to make FCP happier, and stay away from any of the MPEG options).

From VHS: If you have a capture card, you can take a BNC cable and connect the card to the RCA output of the VHS (for the audio though you'll likely need a 10-4 convertor, which I'm thinking you probably don't have access to). Otherwise, go RCA (yellow, red, white) out from the VHS to the RCA in of a DV device (Deck or camera) and clone it off that way. Then log and load it.

Or daisy chain the whole thing. Go RCA out from VHS. To to the RCA in of your DV device. Then firewire in to the computer. You'll have to use Capture Now and set things to non-controllable device, but for a school project where you just need to get the footage in, it ought to work.

Cheers.
