capturing error

Hopefully, someone can help me here. I'm capturing some footage off my dvx100 on my college's FCP 3 program. I've successfully captured 7 clips out of 24 using batch capture, but I received an error saying that "an error occurred finding one or more of the specified capture scratch volume(s). Verify that both audio and video scratch disks are set in the preferences."
I'm new to editing, so I might have missed something obvious, but could someone help me a little. Thanks.

Re: capturing error

Go through your Preferences (there are a few in FCP) and make sure they are set to specific volumes and that you have a lot of disk space. OS X wants at least 1 Gig free (much more is better) so you want to avoid filling up the disk. If these are firewire drives for scratch drives you coudl have problems capturing.

Re: capturing error

I left the college already so I haven't tried anything yet, but yeah, we have to use firewire drives as scratch drives b/c they have it set up where we can't save too much on the actual hard drive. Do you think this might be the problem? My firewire is a 200 gig drive with nothing else on it.

Re: capturing error

Plugin the drives before starting up FCP and then go into prefs and set it to your drive. If everyone is switching drives it could easily be trying to save out to a non-existant drive or failiing that trying to save locally with not much disk space.

Re: capturing error

you're in college! Use capture now!
If you walk away from the cam/deck, even the labtechs may screw with you. Do your time. We've all done it. Find a funny website, or a friend to amuse you. Write that emotional email you've been avoiding...try not to do anything that consumes processor power, resist the temptation to play a game...that's what Ipods are for..

Seriously?
I'm fresh out of a university digital video environment, and for SOME reason, batch captures are always jacked up. It may have to do with drive permissions or antivirus software, or some other student brought in a hard drive behind the tech's back, and now there's a conflict...there's nothing worse than fighting the batch capture. Stick with your footage. The worst thing that could happen is that you watch it and get even more familiar with it, thus *potentially* reducing the time you spend editing. The best thing that could happen is that you spot a dumb error without wasting the precious 63 minute chunks of your life.

Re: capturing error

Well, to the guys who were helping me out...I figured out that it was just a couple of clips that were giving me problems. I've batch catpured (which, to hillcity, means that I've sat with my footage and gone through all my takes marking good, bad, in, out, etc., so I'm not just doing a capture now and letting it go) and all of my clips (probably 60 or so) came out fine on my firewire drive. The only problem are three clips that I can't seem to get to capture. I keep getting the error I described above about scratch volume(s). I'm not sure what the problem is. I've tried capturing by clip and capture now in addition to the regular batch, but I keep getting the error. My tape was completely "blacked" before we shot, so the timecode shouldn't have broken up. The clips are in the middle of the tape, too -- that's what's puzzling me. They are about 30 mins and 40 mins into a 60 min tape. All the clips directly around them worked fine. I read something somewhere about trying to capture to an internal drive, then transferring to the firewire, but I'm not sure these computers are set up to allow students to capture to the internal. They want everyone to use firewire. Any thoughts?
