Capturing DVX footage for the first time...

I'm taking in some DVX footage using a Sony DCR-HC32 as a makeshift deck. Are there any settings I need to check or presets to use before capturing? I shot 24p 4:3 with the fake letterbox bars applied and I want to make sure there are no interlace lines in the final product. What workflow should I follow? My final output will be for NTSC dvd.

Thanks!

You are kidding?

You shot 24p and you don't want lines? Your final output is NTSC dvd... why wouldn't you want interlace lines?

Why?

Simple issues I like to address here -- entire workflow process? Call me - I'll charge you. You need to do some reading first and understand what 24p and 24pA do for you on that camera.

Holy crud.

Uh...can I get a serious answer please?

I just want to make sure I have the right sequence and capture settings. Clearly I don't want NTSC-DV 24p Advanced Pulldown, and I thought I should use NTSC-DV, but then I saw the NTSC-DV 24p setting and wondered if that was the one for me. It's a simple question, and if you can't come down off your internet high horse long enough to answer it like an adult, I'd appreciate it if you didn't pollute my threads with your grade school grammar and "READ UP, NOOB" attitude.

I googled this beforehand and none of the tutorials I found are current enough to factor in version 6 of FCP, so I thought I'd try this forum as a last resort.

Try passing on some knowledge instead of scoffing at others' lack of it. You might even gain some in return.

FCP DVX100 support has gone unchanged since FCP 5 so many older tutorials do apply. Did you read this:

DVX100 24pA footage should always be captured at 29.97 because that's what's on the tape. When a user wants to cut at 23.98 they need to properly remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown introduced by the DVX100 during filming. The DVX100 flags these extra frames and embeds these flags into the Firewire data stream. FCP can read these flags back during ingest and conform the 29.97 pulldown footage back to the 23.98 captured by the camera. That is what the Remove Advance Pulldown from 2:3:3:2 sources checkbox in the capture settings is for. But in order to do this properly, the FPS setting in FCP must be set at 29.97 to give FCP the full firewire data stream and allow it to properly recognize the flags and remove the Advance pulldown frames.

If you set the capture FPS at 23.98, FCP will randomly delete frames to get from 29.97 to 23.98 but they will not be the correct frames. You'll wind up with a 23.98 file that looks odd during playback from FCP because the 2:3:3:2 interlaced pulldown frames are still there along with randomly missing progressive frames. This has become the number one issue plaguing FCP users with DVX100 footage who want to cut at 23.98 and has resulted in a lot of confusion. I've hoped to lobby Apple on this issue so that they might include a warning pop-up in FCP giving notice that 23.98 FPS capture will result in improperly digitized DVX100 footage but haven't made any headway and Panasonic hasn't been able to either- maybe you can help with that.

I know it seems counterintuitive that one would use 29.97 as the capture frame rate in order to ingest 23.98 footage but that's how it must be done because of the way the format is recorded to tape.

If'n you'd get off YOUR internet high horse for a second and stop just copying and pasting answers you've given a thousand times before you might actually learn something!!

I just wonder if this person is old enough to know where his name comes from, or if it was just an overheard from the parents!

Oddly, there are SO many stickies on this subject on this first page it's very hard to miss.

Here's your answer:

24p WILL give you interlacing... well, not INTERLACING but combining lines. If you want to know how to get rid of them call me, I'll walk you thru it for $50 bucks an hour, or you can do a google for pulldown cadence... telecine... Cinema Tools... oh and what ever else you can think of.

Noah and I did!!

Sheesh,

I did come across most of that information, Noah. The only thing is that I don't think I shot 24p Advanced. I wasn't the DP. I was directing...but I'm pretty sure we weren't shooting 24pA. Does that help clarify a bit?

Perhaps a better question would be, will there still be flags in the data stream if I didn't shoot 24p Advanced?

No it doesn't.

24p is what it is. It is a film look and meant to be shown at 29.97.

Is that what you want?

OR, are you trying to get it to 24 frames per second?

You can see what you've actually shot by stepping through frame by frame if you see 2 combined frames for every 3 progressive then you've shot 24p. If you see 1 combined for every 4 progressive then you've shot 24pA. Either way - your best bet right now is to capture it 29.97 regardless.

THEN, 1) leave it... 2) remove the cadence inside FCP or 3) Remove the cadence in Cinema Tools.

Ok, so does this mean I can just capture all my footage as usual and edite everything on the 29.97 timeline? (and still get the 24p look?)

because I shoot everything in 24pa and I'm just editing on the 29.97 timeline but I keep getting the odd interlaced footage on every other frame......am I doing it right?

No, capture 29.97 AND remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown for 24pA. This means FCP reads a 29.97 data stream from your camera but keeps a 23.98 stream as your video file. You would then edit on a 23.98 timeline.

Final Cut automaticly captures at 29.97 right?
because I think it was set to DV-NTSC...so I think that was done right.

so how do you remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown for 24pa?

I know how to set the timeline to 23.98
it's
Final Cut Pro> Easy Setup> then choose the 23.98 right?

open the capture window

go to the third tab "Capture Settings"

where it says "Capture/Input", set it to DV/NTSC 48khz Advanced Pulldown Removal
