Capturing DVCPRO 24p (recorded at 29.97)

Hey guys,
First off im not a video editor im a production sound mixer that got suckered into dealing with all of this last minute.

A client rented an SDX900 camera
and deck (to capture).

We recorded to DVCPRO 25 at 24p. Camera does the pulldown and
its laid to tape at 29.97.

Using premiere to capture todays footage (via firewire) I noticed there weren't
many settings to choose from in capture mode. Is that all embedded within the tape?

My problem is this. If you go into Windows explorer and look at properties it is saying its a 29.97 file. Plays fine in windows media player.

In Premiere (and sony vegas) its seeing the file as a 23.98 saying
"removing 3-2 pull down".

Does this mean the editing programs are seeing the "frame flags" within
the footage and removing the pull down and interlacing on the fly?

If I play it back on a 29.97 time line it appears to be playing at the wrong speed, but I cant be 100% sure with this footage.

I guess my main question is what would be the correct setup to edit this footage in premiere.

After the 2nd day tomorrow and I capture it I'll be passing off her harddrive back to her and would love to tell her how to setup her timeline so
I dont get multiple calls down the road. (she is not an experienced editor at all)

I have CS4, and she has CS4 as well.

Once again, I never sold myself to do this, nor DO i do this kind of thing
but since its now on my lap I'd really appreciate any help or guidance you guys
could give me.

Thanks

In Premiere there is a function called "Interpret Footage", I don't have Premiere up, but I believe some of the options include removing the pulldown. I believe in Premiere you have to have a 23.976 project setup. I've only done interpret footage operations in After Effects, and for some reason it seemed to be more straight forward...

As it is I've been using Final Cut Express to do the log and transfer for AVCHD media that is 24p encoded as 60i, then used a widget tool called JES to remove the pulldown, then import into Premiere.

Probably overkill or extrawork, but that's the only way I can get stuff encoded originally as AVCHD to be more easily edited on the systems I have available.

Since you are using DVCPRO 25, that fengeling to get to a useful editing codec, may not be necessary.

Your DVCPRO25 footage is probably 23.976 with a 3:2 pulldown to make it 29.97 so it is NTSC compliant.

It would probably be best to remove the 3:2 pulldown so that it is native 23.976 and give it to your editor like that where they can edit at native 23.976.

You should be able to remove the pulldown with After Effects CS4: 3:2 pulldown removal
I don't believe Adobe Premiere CS4 has a 3:2 pulldown removal feature so you could use a program like DVFilm Maker to remove the pulldown. Premiere CS4 should remove 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown, but most likely your source is 3:2.

Hope this helps,
Andy
